to defend democrats, john hanna who worked for john kerry and barack obama.hillary saying everyday americans. >> yes. it is a phrase that a lot of consultants and a lot of wordsmiths kind of grapple with every cycle to figure out which phrase to mean the same thing -- john: because people don't like ordinary? >> they don't like ordinary americans. nobody likes to be called an average american, but everyday americans is what she's using to convey the vast majority of people who are in the middle class or who think they're in the middle class. john: it must the war -- >> the republican party is at war with you and, therefore, you should not even consider what they have to say. john: this worked? >> certainly in 2012, i think there were a number of candidates on the republican side who said certain things that helped feed this national narrative. >> i think a lot of these slogans are deceitful as they are at simplifying complex problems, and they're effective. john: you also hate it mark when republicans say we can't be simply throwing more money at the problem.

joining us tonight is john hanna, former national security advisor for former vice president dick cheney. good to have you with us. let's first turn to the gulf summit. two heads of state from the six arab nations show up. is that still a summit? >> i think it's hardly a summit. we have to call it something else. a meeting of the deputy heads of state and the president? i don't know what you would call it. >> we are going to call it g-2 because only two heads of states are there, the affection on the part of washington for gs when they talk about meetings. what can possibly be a clearer message in this meeting amongst nations or at least their delegations and the president than there is immense distrust on the part of the arab states of this government and its policies? >> huge lou. it's just a fundamental crisis of confidence in the gulf in american leadership. they watched what the president has done for six years, his entire presidency virtually has been about getting the united states out of the region and cutting a grand bargain with iran. the arch-enemy of these gulf arabs. so the

. >>> for perspective, we turn to john hanna senior counselor for defense democracies, former national security adviser to former vice president dick cheney. it sounds an awful lot like boots on the ground something the president said wasn't going to happen. >> it does lee lan, it looks like a shift in the u.s. approach. so far, we know special forces are in iraq. special forces have been training iraqis. they've been calling in some air strikes. but to have them in this kind of highly risky combat role. i think the only other place we've seen it inside of syria is when there's an attempt to free a u.s. hostage. >> attempted rescue of james foley, very different than doing some kind of snatch and grab operation. the other question i had was thank god everything went well here. all the americans returned safely. you could have ended up in a situation with dead u.s. special forces, tragic or u.s. special forces captured in the hands of isis. something that conceivably would have been a game changer. what is the decision that had to go on inside the white house to risk this much? >> eithe
