john harris is politico's editor-in-chief.s a real threat to pelosi's leadership? >> there's not yet an arithmetic threat to pelosi's leadership. that is, heath shuler doesn't have the votes and basically acknowledges that he doesn't have the votes to defeat her. where there is a threat is if this battle drags on and there become as consensus, like, wait a minute. we like nancy pelosi, but this is just not good for party and people encouraging her to reconsider her position to remain as leader of the democrats. at the moment, she seems secure. >> does this, though, force her to play more to the liberal base and be more resistant to any compromises on the big issues coming up, such as the tax cuts? >> well, there's no question, andrea, that that is her base in the house. it's the liberals. there's more of them proportionately that that base is stronger than before the election, because as you know, so many of the moderate democrat, the so-called blue dogs and what have you, those people are precisely the ones that got beat in t

john harris. >> it's my job to lift the tone a little bit. >> thank you. we need it desperately. let's talk about harry reid, you guys reporting he's going to be making changes to the way things are done in the senate. what does that mean exactly? >> no question. it's a recognition of reality that although harry reid and democrats were able barely to hold control of the senate, they got a huge challenge of 2012. they basically won in 2010, kept the majority by luck and a couple of bad choices that republicans made. there's widespread recognition in reid's caucus that he may be a great inside player in terms of knowing where the legislation is, controlling the schedule, cutting back room deals, but he's really pretty bad at message and communications. reid is essentially acknowledging that. he's giving up control which had been tightly held within his office and spreading it out around the caucus. he's giving a big part of the communications and message strategy to senator chuck schumer. schumer's deputy, deputy stabenow. the two will have much more control over the public messagin

congressman, there was an interesting analysis offered at politico today by jonathan allen and john harris that suggested among the reasons why the speaker maintained her leadership position within the democratic party was to hold the white house in check, that she would be a progressive check on a president's temptation this president's temptation to gravitate toward the middle. does that make sense to you as someone who was supportive of her? had. >> well, certainly, you know, it is important that congress, as a body, be an important check on the executive branch but we look forward to working with this administration. certainly nancy has demonstrated she can do that but she is. i think that is a good analysis. she is an important check, not only on the president but on the senate as well and i think you are going to see a more determined house come around in terms of our relationship with the senate and our ability to work with the executive branch and she certainly does represent that but more importantly, we know how to work together with peoplement we are following reach across ate y

nobody ever questioned that john kennedy was a catholic or harry truman was a baptist. when you get a large segment questioning whether barack obama is a christian, whether he is an american, and that number is growing, that is the byproduct of what you are describing, of irresponsible on edited and unaccountable information being circulated both in broadcast and in print. >> the first guantanamo detainee -- >> we would like to express our sympathy for the 224 people who died and the hundreds of others who were injured on august 7, 1998 progress on august 7, 1998, attacks on american embassies carried out by members of al- qaeda planned by osama bin laden killed 224 people. prosecutors say the suspect help al-qaeda with a truck and also brought explosives and so forth. this week, a federal jury convicted him of only one count of conspiracy. how could you not get convictions on 284 counts? >> there is a first the possibility that his story is true, but i am dubious because i know some things that the jury did not know. this will certainly reignite the debate over this. a

harry reid overperformed john ralston, that's a big feat out in nevada. jeremy, what else around the country? sure, democrats had a few bright spots, but in the long run, this is a pretty historic defeat. >> absolutely. and i think one thing to point out is the number of tea party candidates and candidates that are backed by senator jim demint that won last night. not all of them did, christine o'donnell, for example, lost. but including demint at this point, that would be six senators in the senate that will be part of that caucus. he gave substantial resources to it. and that gives him a tremendous amount of bargaining power and leverage when it comes to the senate. if ken buck survives -- ends up winning in colorado, that would be a seventh. so we're approaching a tenth of the senate being at least in some way either with their bank accounts and what not aligned with jim demidget. demint, of course, has said he's not going to run for president, but this gives him all sorts of bargaining power in the senate. >> and yet of the six seats that republicans

republicans, democrats, senate, house, eight leaders, nancy pelosi, mitch mcconnell, harry reid, john boehner and the rest all down the line. turns out, not so fast. the white house put out a statement last night saying, due to scheduling conflicts in the republican caucuses -- which is in itself, if you follow these things, is a little bit of slap -- they call them conferences, chuck. the democrats are caucuses. they say that meeting will have to put off until november 30th. a lot of back and forth behind the scenes. a republican spokesman for mcconnell, don stewart, saying this thing was never scheduled to begin with. it has been known, chuck, of all the times the president has called republicans up here from the health care debate onward, that meeting they had across the street at the blair house, republicans don't like this issue of them being summoned up here to the white house and standing and asking questions to the president, who is clearly running things. hey, they're a co-equal branch of government and they're running things now, at least in the house of representatives. so

i want everybody to know that i have called mitch mcconnell, john boehner, harry reid, and nancy pelosi to invite them to a meeting at the white house the first week of lame-duck on november 18. we need to move the agenda for. it will not just be a photo opportunity. the immediate focus is going to be what we need to get done during the lame-duck session. i mentioned yesterday that we have to act in order to assure that middle-class families do not see a big tax hike because of how the bush tax cuts were structured. it is very important that we extend those middle-class tax provisions. there is a whole range of economic issues that have to be addressed. unemployment insurance for people who are still out there looking for work, business expenditures to encourage businesses to invest here in the united states. if we do not have those, we are losing a very important tool to increase business investment and job growth over the coming year. we have to provide businesses some certainty about what their tax landscapes will look like. we have to provide families with certainty. that is critica

. >> the other thing i want to ask you about is the meeting between john boehner and harry reid who will side, and then the decision not to meet with president obama. and we are too busy and he set that timetable, and we were not consulted on that, and don't you all risk the appearance of not, of still wanting to remain what they have tagged you with is of party of no, and why not go up to talk to the president and be open to things? >> well, we will have that meeting and again, i was not involved in the date setting. >> does it worry you that they delayed it for appearance? >> well, literally before i walked on your show tonight, voted for john boehner to be speaker-elect, and they wanted to be mindful to not put the cart before the horse. and one quarter of the conferees are now, and they are mindful of what the leadership is doing, and so before the leadership goes out to speak for the conference, they want to make sure they are the elected leadership and get a stens of the incoming freshmen and where they stand. >> well, canal di, do you think they were getting pushback from the conf

i think the key is whether nancy pelosi and john baner and harry reid and mitch mcconnell can work with the president to get things done. >> do you think it's possible, especially with mitch mcconnell saying he wants him to be a one-term president? does the public believe they can coming to o anything. >> we are still in campaign mode. that will change. we get into the next year, republicans and democrats both now feel invested. the house is controlled by the republicans and the senate by democrats. they will have to show they accomplished something over the course of the next two years in order to justify their reelection. clearly that new investment in legislative and governance will make a difference. i'm hopeful that we may not agree on the first two priorities, the third, fourth, and fifth may be ones for which there is common ground. that's the way it worked in the 90s when i was a leader and we can make it work again. >> tuesday was proof positive that the public is not patient like they once were. after the president took the she lacking, how do you think he jump-started things?

i want everybody to know that i have already called mitch mcconnell, john boehner, harry reid, and nancy pelosi, and i invite them to a meeting here at the white house in the first week of the lame-duck session. this is going to be a meeting where i want to hopefully it may spill over into dinner. the immediate focus will be what we get done during the lame-duck session. i mentioned yesterday, we have to act in order to ensure that middle-class families do not see a big tax spike because of how the bush tax cuts have been structured. it's very important that we extend those middle-class tax provisions. there are a range of other economic issues that have to be addressed. unemployment insurance for folks who are still looking forwar work. business incentives. if we do not have those, we are losing a very important tool for us to be able to increase business investment and increase job growth over the coming year. we have to provide businesses with certainty on what their tax landscape will look like, and we have to provide family certainty. that is critical to maintain our recovery. i sho
