now. >> david, let me ask you a question, and it's john heilemann here.'ll ask to you and then have richard answer the same question. u.s. and israel are going to be confronting iran together, as they always do. prime minister netanyahu did some extraordinary in this campaign which was to kind of almost offer a tacit -- maybe not tacit -- almost explicit endorsement of mitt romney. what do you think the current state of relations is post-election and what effect that might have, if any, on how the iranian thing plays out? >> let me take a first shot at that. i don't think that the u.s., that president obama, will get us involved in israel's elections, which are scheduled at the end of january as prime minister netanyahu seemed to many u.s. observers to do in the case of the u.s. i hear from my israeli political analyst friends that prime minister netanyahu really does have a problem going towards these january elections in that he is seen as having put at risk the most valuable, crucial national security asset that israel has, which is its close relations

with us new york magazine's john heilemann. cnn's gloria borger. the grio and msnbc's joy reid. and the huffington post howard fineman. first up, here we are in the time capsule. the weekend before the election asking why is this so close? still so unpredictable. both men face big hurdles to getting elected and that's why it's so close. president obama's got the jobless he inherited but can't quite beat. friday's new jobs report was encouraging but gains are still behind what we need. in a reflection of that, 62% of voters say they would like or want major changes in an obama second term. and on the other side, mitt romney's a challenge that normally blocks any presidential candidate. not even 30% of voters think he understands the arage american. john, these are amazing handicaps. the unemployment situation still high. sort of remoteness of mitt romney from the voter. they both carry these burdens. is this why it's so close? >> yes. in one word. and i'll give you a few more. what the president has been unbootable incumbent for really his entire term in office. you think about t

let's go to john heilemann. look at the maps.have some maps, both of them are running like mad, where they're heading. look at this, you can tell a lot about the contest as i implied, look where they're going. look where romney is headed. according to nbc's first read, romney was in florida yesterday and virginia today. he'll also hit wisconsin, ohio, new hampshire, and colorado before the election. the president, this is an interesting map for him, he will be in wisconsin, where he is right now, with nevada, colorado, ohio, iowa, virginia, and florida. of course, they're sending their number one surrogates, the vp nominee, out where they're not going. is this the map, centered in ohio, virginia, and florida, is it still where the action is? >> it is for governor romney for sure. it's always been the case that governor romney needs to win florida, needs to win virginia, and pretty much needs to win ohio. even then he still needs to pick up another state somewhere along the way. you can see in his map that he's spending months of
