john heilemann, that's what yesterday was about. i'm told by trump insiders, joe's hunch is right, that there was a campaign briefing scheduled the day before for some reporters to come down there, and the trump aides would talk about the state of the race. trump said, well, if they're here, i'll have a news conference. they're trying to draw a contrast because vice president harris hasn't taken that many questions since being the nominee. she should. but that's not an issue that's going to move voters. i don't think that's something that really matters. really what this was about was trump trying to say, i am angry at my staff. they're failing me. i'm going to go out there and try to fix things. yet, if the goal here is to win over some new voters, hard to see that happened. >> first of all, this is all just another blow to the new trump narrative. >> which was insane. >> we look back on that one moment right before the republican convention, when serious people were talking about how there might be a new trump after the failed ass

john heilemann, what do you make of all this? losing. i think it is the case, you know, in that moment when these young representatives, many of them very talented, many of them with potentially bright futures in front of them won in the midterm elections in 2018 that became known as the squad. it's been kind of a catchall phrase that didn't necessarily capture the variety of the people within that group and the variance with how progressive or how far left they are. you have someone like ayanna pressley who had been a mainstream democrat who was lumped in because of her age and race in that group, but there's always been some divergence. and the members of the squad who have been the most vulnerable, people like jamaal bowman and cori bush have been far extreme on the democratic ideology and positioning for some time. they looked vulnerable going into their primaries. in a presidential year, a congresswoman from missouri who was going to have to be running in this bigger broader electorate, cori bush was someone who was going to

and you know, john heilemann, people may be asking why, why the harris campaign is focusing on evangelicalsbrought up the fact that barack obama got 26% of the white evangelical vote and won. hillary clinton in 2016 only got 16% of the white evangelical vote and lost. joe biden got 24% of the white evangelical vote and won. as david brody at cbn says, if kamala harris can get 20% plus of the white evangelical vote, her chances of winning go up substantially in this election that's going to be determined on the margins. >> well, right, joe, it's -- i think that just to be helpful to a lot of viewers who fall into the camp of godless secularists, like me, they -- we should note that like, i think people don't appreciate the breadth of the evangelical church and the evangelical self-identification. people hear evangelical and hear "christian right." and the reality is that both -- it is almost entirely white, but a lot of suburban areas in battleground states and certainly in a lot of places in rural america, there is -- and in the white working class, non-college whites is another demographic

wow. >> not really surprising here, john heilemann.rprising if you look at all the polls how most of them, the most recent polls have all -- we have had a bit of a reversal where you heard karl rove coming in talking about the momentum seems to be on her side and it does seem to be on her side right now, on the democrats' side. she's pulled ahead by one or two points in most polls which means it's tied. you look at the swing states, it means it's tied. what i find fascinating and completely predictable is the fact that joe biden was having the biggest problems and we've said it on this show forever that joe biden would have to bring home younger voters, people of color. that's what kamala harris has peers to be doing here. she's bringing home people of color, she's bringing home younger voters of the democratic party and the big question on who is going to be the next president of the united states is whether she can perform almost as well as joe biden did among older working class white voters in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania.
