. >>> for the latest john hendren is in gaza and joins me live. what does the situation look like as the dust settles and the morning rises there? >> this whole conflict escalated dramatically overnight. the israelis hit four homes overnight. apparently not trying to target the people inside the homes, as you saw there. they called and warned them to get out, then demolished the homes from the air. often they fired a warning shot ahead of time, we are told. that was 50 attacks there overnight from the israelis. there were apparently 80 rocket attacks coming out of gaza overnight. there was an extremely aggressive exchange of fire on both sides overnight. that considerably escalates the conflict. we talked to a hamas spokesman who said they are not looking to escalate the conflict. nevertheless, this frees their hand to retaliate against israel. in the words of the hamas spokesman, and we talked to the parliamentary leader of ham a and he said they are not looking for a conflict, but if israel wants war "we'll give it to them." >> there's no interm

john hendren joins us live from gaza. more air strikes, more people on the move. are there further developments today? >> the strikes were consistent throughout the night. we had occasional rocket fire coming out of gaza, and we had fire coming in from the israelis. it was not as heavy a night as the previous couple of night. 10 homes were struck, and there was a mosque in central gaza, which was hit as well. the sheer breadth of fire power is breath taking. you have the air strikes coming in. you have naval ships which have been pounding away this morning. you've got artillery from the border areas importantly, and recently we have seen the introduction of apache helicopters, firing machine gun fire. one can only presume at presumed rocket launchers. that has contributed to the sense of constant bombardment here. each though the number of strikes has been lower over the night. it's been consistent and the feeling of this fight is one of consistent escalation with more military equipment being used, more homes being struck. >> let's leave john in gaza and go to be

john hendren is live from gaza. i believe you are standing outside a hospital. what have you found there? >> i'm at the shiffa hospital, the main hospital in gaza city. it has the most equipment when there are sophisticated operations, large numbers of people wounded, they wom here. in that story you heard about the family, and this is where they ended up after the ones that survive that incident. after that explosion. this is where people come, they have been in gaza. short of equipment and supplies, blood. that sort of thing. we are going to go in and talk to some people and hopefully come out with a story explaining how short of equipment they are. this is a relatively quiet morning. while the bombing is consistent, it was not as heavy as it was in previous nights. the sheer breadth of the armory used, we are talking about artillery, air strikes, naval ships and helicopters used in this campaign, machine-gunning. on the cost. all of that has been rather broad. it's included everything except a large number of troops. in gaza city that is what people are worri

let's go to john hendren, our correspondent in jerusalem. what more do we know, john? >> it sounds like a group of palestinian fighters were infiltrating from central gaza. they got across to the israeli side of the border and came into a confrontation with israeli forces. two israeli troops were killed in that, one a sergeant and another a major. both were killed. there were four injured in the incident. four israelis. one of the palestinian fighters was killed. the others escaped, presumably through the same tunnel that they came into. this is the first israeli fighters killed in a confrontation with palestinians. yesterday there was an incident in which one israeli was killed, and previously we were told there was an israeli killed in an operation involving the tunnel. these are the first killed in a confrontation with palestinian fighters. >> what likely impact is this going have on the israeli strategy? well, binyamin netanyahu, the israeli prime minister said yesterday that things would get tougher. the military chef of staff emphasised -- chief of staff emphasis

john hendren went to one of gaza city's busiest and filed this report. >> reporter: the main hospital in gaza no longer treats regular patients. it is now devoted to the victims of the israeli bombing campaign like 9-year-old. she convinced her father to let her out for a breath of fresh air. after five minutes she followed him back inside. just steps ahead of an air strike. >> translator: i sent her back in the corridor when i was locking up the house. i looked behind me and i saw miriam sinking in a pool of blood with shrapnel in her head. >> taking care of disabled children when the building exploded in flames. >> translator: in the morning i find myself burning. i didn't hear an explosion but suddenly i was on fire. my body, my face, my hair. everything was burning. this is a crime committed by the israelis. what crime did these handicapped children commit? they are not even able to fire rockets or even walk outside. >> reporter: the hospital the fully occupied and yet hour after hour the balances bring more victims. here in the reception area, they are not turning away any bombin

al jazeera's john hendren is in gaza. good evening to you.hat has been happening there in the past few hours? >> good evening. what is happening right now, as we speak there are booms in the background. overnight we have seen plumes, all along the sky line at one point to another. over the last 24 hours, it's been the most concentrated series of strikes on both sides that have occurred so far. israel said it would escalate the campaign. hamas said it would broaden its range of rocket strikes into israel. well, both sides kept their word. we have had over 117 rocket strikes from the gaza area, 273 israeli strikes from air, sea and land, and they have taken their toll. 29 people have been killed more than 100 injured. one of them was a man from islamic jihad's military wing, in a house strike. the israelis are hitting houses. that has had a terrifying effect on the population. it's really insanely loud, if one of these things goes off near you. and that has a real effect on the people all around, i know, because i have colleagues in a hotel whe

the latest out of israel, our john hendren is joining us on the ground in jerusalem. >> israel has lostts first soldiers in a direct conflict. before if gang. two men were killed as pal finishian fighters after they came. the border encountering israel soldiers. their greenberg. those are the first two fighters to be killed until a direct confrontation with palestinian fighters. there was a friendly fire death one day earlier when an israeli tank went off and killed one israeli soldier we told one palestinian was killed. the rest escaped presumably from whenings they came. more than 100 coming out of gaza. >> that's significant because the number 1 goal of theisitioni operation is to stop the rockets coming out of gaza so far that has been unsuccessful. we are told 18 of those rockets. four landed the prime minister benjamin netanyahu and came out saying that so far, all cease-fire efforts have been unsuccessful. the united nations secretary general would be coming on tuesday. there is much diplomatic effort going oning but so far, that is a result that the cease-fire is entirely unsucc

john hendren is joining us from jerusalem. , there are conflicting reports right now about how many soldiers were actually killed. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: the israeli military tells us that the granted total of soldiers who have been killed in the past 2 for hours is two. they say what happened in that incident is a number of palestinians had infiltrated through to the israeli side of that border with gaza and they encountered a number offisitioni army troops. there was an exchange of fire. two were killed. four of them were injured. we were also told by israel officials that one of the palestinians was killed but the rest of them apparently escaped leaving many of their weapons behind. we asked the israeli military about reports by hamas that there had been as many as 15 israeli troops killed in two separate encounters. they have said, no. >> that's not the case. we should note that there are occasions in which it takes awhile for those numbers to get back to us. usually, any major military like this will notif

. >>> john hendren is also on the ground in gaza. >> reporter: remind me is what remains of the homef a senior leader of hamas, and one of 40 people, all officials, who's homes were targeted overnight. it turns out there is something like 400 homes that have been targeted like this. 4,000 have been partially damaged, 400 of them totally destroyed. and again, one of 40 overnight. you can see that this is what his front porch looked like. and up here this is part of the four-story building that was his home. now his tail a long and winding one, and that's because in 2004, the israelis destroyed his previous home, killing one of his children. one of his children was killed in another offensive against the israelis, and then he and his wife were also injured when his first home was destroyed. so this is the second time around for this official. it is particularly interesting, because groups like human rights watch say targeting these civilian homes is a violation of international law. they say targeting military sites is acceptable, and israel has been very careful to declare these homes

. >>> let's go to john hendren. we are waiting on hamas - what is the problem... >> we are waiting for a clear and definitive statement from hamas. we don't have that so far. we have a statement from the military arm of hamas, which is not the official spokesman, and they, of course, reject this agreement. they say they want the preconditions met. prisoners arrested before and released in a 2012 agreement. they want them released and the siege on gaza, that is isolated. they want the borders open and the sea lanes expanded. that is the official passion of hamas. i spoke to a spokesperson. but we know that in the negotiations people's positions move. what we are getting from hamas is a number of fuzzy statements in the past 24 hours, but not a direct response to the agreement. what it will be, we don't know. obviously there is dissent, as there is in the israeli government. as hamas formulates a response to this agreement, we are seeing that the ceasefire is not over. there's 25 air streaks, five rocket attacks. and

john hendren is at a school used as an evacuation center. >> it may be difficult for you to say this, but is there signs that people are heeding the warning and getting out of the towns that you mentioned. >> there are signs. the school is fully occupied. it's a new gaza boys prep school. many of the residents came when they were warned by the israelis to get out of the area. thousands wept back home. a number came back after getting leaflets like this dropped from the sky telling them the israeli army was coming back, wanted them to leave and would target rocket-firing points. they are back. many, however, found that they no longer have a place to stay. having left those homes. in some cases people say the homes have been destroyed. with that deadline occurring at 8 o'clock local time, it's a come of hours ago. people are just starting to arrive here. it turns out there aren't facilities to hold these people. we are having people here staying in the courtyard. a lot of people do not have rooms, and we are told by the united nations, which is hosting this site, that this will be likel

john hendren is in israel now, and he is live there covering the situation. what can you tell us about the israeli operation? >> well, we have heard two different stories. as paul discussed there, we've been told that israel is after the tunnels, ones across the border others through to egypt, and where a lot of material where rockets have been smuggled. it's those tunnels, and the israeli military wants to strike all of them. israel went after gaza with air strikes. it did not work. they negotiated a ceasefire, hamas didn't accept that. the rockets flew out. they are trying the ground invasion. it's looking like a limited incursion. they haven't got into gaza city. will they focus on the rocket launching and tunnels. if as some suggested, they are trying to demill ittarise gaza, it will be a house to house search and fight, the high casualties that we saw in fallujah and elsewhere. that would be ropinger and much blood -- longer and much bloodied. >> are civilians being warned about possible retaliation from hamas? >> in israel there has been a threat not ju

john hendren is in verz. >> the is -- jerusalem. ipted. >> the israeli military attack pressed forward. the stated objective is to launch a ground invasion stopping the ability of hamas to launch rockets out of gaza and tart the tup else -- targett tunnels allowing palestinians to infiltrate and sneak rocket parts and weapons across the egyptian border and tunnels allowing leaders and weapons to be hidden underground. the israeli prime minister binyamin netanyahu had a cabinet meeting in which he was authorised to accelerate the ground campaign. the israeli military chief of staff said the campaign would accelerate, but both lowered expectations, and binyamin netanyahu said there's no guarantee that this will be 100% successful. he said they tried the other options. a ceasefire negotiate, and this is what is left over. without action, he said, the price would be high. he went on to stay that there are facts he cannot reveal to the public. so far the israeli military said they found dozens of tunnels. some could take days to exploit.
