governor john hickenlooper is joining me right now. can you give me an update on the situation? >> we're still bracing ourselves. the heavy rain hasn't started in the foothills yet but they are predicting some serious rain, flash floods from the foothills out to the plains, the platt river is 14 feet high in washington county. there's also the flood stage out on the platt where they are evacuating several thousand people. quite a wide swath. >> how confident are you in the 500 unaccounted for, we know many may have gotten out or fine but simply don't have any kind of phone service, cell or otherwise. are there people, do you think, that are stuck somewhere on kind of an island with the roads around them completely flooded that have yet to be rescued? >> well, i think there are people like that, not in peril but they have been two or three days without power, cell phones, internet connection so they are pretty frustrated and probably anxious. in many cases, anxious. so we're trying to find them. unfortunately the cloud cover today is going to make it more difficult to do the sear

governor john hickenlooper is expected to give a press conference any minute now. first joining me from boulder from the heart of the flood zone, the weather channel's mike seidel. mike, how are things looking right now? >> reporter: good morning, chris. things are getting better here in the front range. the rain has backed off considerably through the overnight hours. we do have another batch coming at us right now but in boulder really no rain for the past four hours or so. look at boulder creek out here. listen to the roar of the creek. it's actually come down from an all-time crest of just under eight feet. normally this is a tranquil creek. but it's coming under the bridge. behind me a tree coming down boulder canyon, stuck under the bridge. debris across the river. this is about 30 yards across. a lot of photo ops out here because of 10, 12, 14 inches of rain that fell in the watershed up in the foothills and down here in the front range. north of here, the big thompson river now has gone across interstate 25. that's the major route between denver and cheyenn

i can tell you that a couple of days ago colorado governor john hickenlooper, were flying over the areas, people waving to get their attention and trying to get help. the governor and the delegation were part of rest accuse. now authorities are asking those folks to make sure when the helicopters fly over they do wave something bright, bright sheets bright blankets bright towels, flashlights, reflectors, anything to be sure they can be seen. i can tell you that 2100 people have been rescued in boulder county alone and in boulder, get this, 17.7 inches of rain. one last net, boulder county officials are having a thousand search and rescue people comb the area to get as many people as possible out of those flood-prone areas. they were not able to get out. del. >> before we lose you the images that have been coming out of colorado in recent days have been horrific to say the very least. describe the reaction of residents. they must be in shock because we are being told that these floods are of biblical proportions. >> yes, they are biblical proportions del. folks are just realize tired and

governor john hickenlooper declared an emergency for 14 counties there, forcing thousands of people toound. some part of the water-logged state could see a few more inches. the flooding affected 4500 square mile area almost the size of connecticut. meteorologist janice dean is joining us now if the fox weather center with more on what we can expect in today and the days ahead. janice? >> unfortunately, you mentioned more rain in the forecast for this waterlogged area. this is historic rainfall. they don't typically see this. if you look at aurora, usually anibel wall ample, what they see on a yearly basis is around 17 inches. they received almost a foot. bolboulder, colorado, 15 inches. in a year they see 20 inches. this is very rare. we are expecting rain in the forecast. maybe an inch or two, but it will not cause the extreme flooding that we saw over the past week. oh% chance of rain on saturday and then we will get through a drying to out period, we need it to happen. we have to get through this weekend with the potential of thunderstorms but getting in the workweek, drier weather

reporter: also, the colorado governor, john hickenlooper, announced the department of defense is nowng coercion guard rescue helicopters to colorado to assist in the rescue efforts throughout the state, and that is because it has been so difficult for all of the search and rescue crews to get into these areas that you can see have been taken over by the torrential rain and this severe flooding here in colorado. this is boulder creek, running through the city of boulder, and has been pushing its way on to areas. this is near the boulder library. today they ran the sirens to warn people to stay away. take a listen. six months after governor john hickenlooper signed a sweeping gun control measure in response to the school shooting in newtown, connecticut, and the massacre in an aurora, colorado, movie theater, two colorado state lawmakers are facing a recall election tomorrow. for more on the tuesday vote, which is attracting national attention and money, we turn to megan verlee with colorado public radio. >> welcome back to "the news hour." first of all, tell us, who behind this effort to go after these lawmakers and what started this whole thing? >> well, it started with a package of gun control legislation that our general assembly passed last spring, and the two most controversial elements were universal background checks for all gun sales, which closed the loophole for gun sales for private individuals and the limit to the size of ammunition magazines to 15 rounds. those are the people that attracted a lot of public attention. the recall started at the grassroots level people in these districts upset with the policies but as you mentioned, very rapidly attracted large outside money and look

very much like barack obama, john hickenlooper is somebody who cast himself as a moderate only recently was admitting these very gun laws he signed into law were not effective, were not going to do anything to stem the kind of violence that we saw in aurora or in newtown. yet he himself had faced a lot of pressure from these outside forces. you may recall that joe biden himself was lobbying our state legislators to get this through because it's part of their larger agenda. it really is another example of the colorado experiment to try and win here and then replicate it in other states, when, you know, republicans were caught in some ways flatfooted. they fought as much as they could. among the important policy issues to stress here, martha, is the fact that this governor, who cast himself as a moderate, and these two state democrats now facing recall, were in fact responsible for extreme gun measures that are forcing renowned companies from the state out-of-state because they're driving ammo and gun manufacturers out of our state and costing us thousands of jobs and hundreds of thousand

. >> john hickenlooper, democratic governor, and then in the wake of newtown he turned around and gotough. the recall effort, though, tell us about the roots of that. where did it come from? when did it start? was this something that began in state? is this a case of national groups saying, we're going to make an example here? >> it started toward the end of legislative session, and there were grassroots organizers in pueblo, senator giron's district, to got enough signatures to get recall on the ballot. it's grown much more attention once these recalls came to the forefront and were actually certified and on the ballot. now we'll -- now we see groups like the nra getting involved heavily. we see groups like the 1630 fund out of washington, d.c., which is a 501-c-4 getting involved and hundreds of thousands pouring in. it's much more than el paso and pueblo county. it's just a small group of voters who are going to decide these district elections. >> how engaged is your party at the statewide level in colorado? highway engaged are you in the process? czink kurtis makes a good point. t
