until i became a premedical student at john hopkins in 1964, i collected i would have to say, randomlyre a few things. i collected african exploration, collected civil war history, abraham lincoln. part of that reflected the era. this was 1961, 1965. that was the centennial of the civil war. but, i was more or less accumulating books. there was no central theme at that. when i was at johns hopkins as a premed, i met a bookseller who store was across the street from a pizza restaurant that some frequented late at night after we were studying. he convinced me that if i was going to go into medicine i should start collecting medical books. in fact in the late 1960s and certainly in the early 1970s winners in medical school focus shifted almost exclusively to collecting medical books. these are just a few of the 15000 books that my wife and i have donated to mayo clinic since 2010. some of these are visually very interesting. the first one is by a dutch anatomist and it was published in 1685. this is an extra engraved title page and there are 105 copperplate engravings in the book they are
