john hullman is in mexico city and sent us this report. >> reporter: one of mexico's most wanted men taken without a shot. servando gomez allegedly ran one of mexico's most powerful criminal organizations. in recent years they branched out from drug trafficking, to extorting farmers and shop keepers. he always maintained he was a man of the people. >> translator: at that time i was a drug trafficker i had a bit of money, and they wanted to steal from me. and i didn't allow that. i don't want to make the comparison to a historic character. but panko via was a major criminal. but there are things that run its course because there are people that do not establish though rule of law. >> reporter: but over the past two years, the cartel was under threat. first from vigilantes and then the federal officials. gomez had been hiding for more than a year. authorities conducted a manhunt to find him. his capture could give a boost to the president beleaguered by scandals, and the on going investigation of the disappearance of 43 students. over the past year mexican officials have proclaimed vic

john hullman has more. >> reporter: this man, la tuta was a very important figure in southwest mexicon as a criminal he hobnobbed with local politicians, including the son of an ex-governor, he organized shipments of iron ore to china, allegedly. so this man was a very powerful figure. he exploited, kidnaps, and kept a very public profile while he was doing it. he granted interviews to national and international media, showing his face even at a time when federal forces were looking for him. they were hunting for him for over a year in a manhunt that went across the state and they finally caught him early this morning in the state capitol without firing a shot apparently. and that's going to be quite a relief to him. he was important, but the gradual infiltration of the state, a state really living in conflict for a few years now, has damaged the importance of him and his cartel. it was a very odd cartel which used medieval shields to set it apart from other cartels, and they did have a real grip on that state but that grip has been slowly crumbling over the past year so now he has be

joining us now is john hullman.ignificant is this capture and what more do we know about this man? >> reporter: as you say this is a significant capture, because the mexican authorities have been after this man for quite some considerable time. he has been moving from safe house to safe house apparently across the southwest of mexico while authorities have been chasing him. he has been giving interviews that seem to have sort of made a mockery at mexican authority's attempts to capture him. so they will be relieved that this long process has ended. the organization that he was one of the major leaders isn't the force that it once was. this year it has been steadily dismantled from a force that used to ship iron ore to china, it has been crumbling. so although once powerful he doesn't have that same sort of power now, but federal forces will be glad they finally managed to close the chapter on this. the man himself, an ex-school teacher. he liked to give money in public cases and film that to meet with journalists. h
