joining me, cnn political correspondent john harwood and democratic strategist joe trippi, now a seniordviser at the lincoln project. john, president biden is focusing on the spike in crime across the country, pushing for more police, more funding for their departments. what are you hearing about this clear step away from the progressive wing of his party? >> don, what it is is a clear step toward majority opinion in the country. remember, joe biden has never been for defunding the police. he was nominated over a series of more liberal candidates and of course elected president. nancy pelosi, the house speaker, does not support defunding the police, nor does chuck schumer. there is a relatively small group of progressive lawmakers who have adopted that slogan. most of the rest of the party considers it a liability. there is a significant overlap between some things that joe biden is for and some things that defund the police crowd are for. for example, he wants to, as part of his anticrime program, crack down on unlicensed gun dealers. he wants to help former felons who are free from in

first, cnn joe johns with the story. >> reporter: 19 year-old at the time. orleans. november 2012. he has gun and starts to run. the gun falls out of his pocket. he carries it for protection. turns out there's been a robbery in the same neighborhood 18 hours earlier. and police think he fits the suspect description. he says he didn't do it. and was nowhere close at the time. >> at the time of the robbery, i was in a hotel. about eight miles from where it happened. >> police get the robbery victim to take a look and only him. the victim says he did it. the victim also identifies his gun as the weapon that was used. he gets locked up and because he has a previous conviction on a drug charge, he's classified as a repeat offender. and at trial at 19 years old, he gets 60 years in prison. with no parole. even though there were enormous flaws in the case. the way police single him out as a suspect. he is brought to a garage alone. handcuffed where the victim waited in a car. during recorded jailhouse telephone calls with his lawyer, police set him up and made him
