i think they're all trying to see themselves, the ones that are behind, as john mccain, back in the day when john mccain was nowhere. by the way, we could go to president biden himself. he had a hard time in new hampshire. he obviously won in south carolina and so forth. so, to me, if you're the candidate and you believe that you can be president of the united states, you want to stay in the race and you want to fight until at least you hear from a voter not from a pundit or pollster. >> that's fair. how is trump going to take to desantis' big tickup in criticism of him? what's he going to do about it? what will he say in iowa about it? >> he will bash him very hard, a lot of legislators are with president trump. he was neck and neck in the race and then the personal ridicule he's known for. governor desantis has a very goodbut he really hasn't shown up to be president. you look at him, the american people have a little test in their head. president, not president, and he has never rung the bell for large enough people. they don't see him as president. he doesn't have the riz -- is that a new nam

ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests in the end, john mccain thought about the beginning. five years ago as johnas dying from brain cancer, john wrote a farewell letter to the nation that he said that he served so well in both war and in peace. his words track back centuries to america's founding and then toward the triumphant future. here's what john wrote and i quote, we are citizens of the world, the world's greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil. americans never quit, they never hide from history. america makes history and john was right. every other, every other nation in the world has been founded on either grouping by ethnicity, religion, background. was right. we're the most unique nation in the world. we're founded on an idea, the only major nation in the world, founded on an idea, an idea that we are all created equal and endowed by our, the image of god, endowed by our creator to be able to treated equal throughout our lives. we've never fully lived up to that idea, but we've never walked away from it, but there's danger. we're walking too far away from it. now, the

room right now anyway for liz cheney, for goodness sakes, or mitt romney, or if john mccain is going to be trashed -- johne party. if, as you write in the book, they defy everything that ronald reagan stood for, what does the republican party look like going forward? >> certainly right now it has been in those principles. i joined the party during the era of ronald reagan, and, today the party looks much more like a kurt cult of personality, frankly. donald trump is not a conservative. he's not been a republican very long. i talk in the book at one point i wanted to say that, or to tweet that i had been a republican longer than donald trump had been straightening. my communications director said now, don't say that. but the seriousness of it is that the party is now walked away from the constitution. and so i don't know if our party can be saved. it may be that we need to build a new party, but i think that those issues have to come after this 2024 cycle, because the focus has to be just completely right now on making sure that we don't return -- to the white house. >> which leads list to the question tha

john mccain's negative vote. he voted against it after campaigning for many years. he said, thumbs down. >> he saved obamacare repealing part of it and why did john mccain vote against it because they didn't have a replacement. but trump clearly sees that what he said, he shouldn't have said. >> trump's message on obamacare took his advisers by surprise when he made that. that was something that is largely seen as settled in the republican party. because they tried for years to repeal and they weren't able to and now everyone wants to leave it alone. >> and it locked them in the majority in 2018. >> 100%. and just the way that he tried to rewrite the narrative on obamacare, he has been trying to do the same thing with abortion on the campaign trail. he has said, republicans need to not be so extreme on abortion. this is an issue you have to be very careful with. but he is the one that appointed three supreme court justices that overturned a woman's right to an abortion. and he acts like there is some great distance from that and he has nothing to do with it. there are a bunch of republican governors that have passed more restrictive state bans si

if he had done a couple things right, if he hadn't gone after john mccain, maybe he would have won arizona, if he hadn't gone against johnis, maybe he would have won georgia. he could have won michigan again, even though the difference was 150,000 votes versus when he had won it back four years before. so he's not going away. and you know, you look at the rhetoric, all the people, telling them to go to hell that don't agree with him, the base loves it, particularly in iowa, let's face it. it's not real good in other places. probably doesn't help him in new hampshire is my guess. >> can we talk about your effort, the no labels effort, trying to create a unity ticket backed by no labels. it would run against trump and biden if that is the general matchup in 2024. where are you on that? and when are you deciding if you get in and who the candidate is? >> well, our goal right now is to get on the ballot. we're trying it provide voters a choice if it is biden and trump again, we want to provide a unity ticket or what would otherwise be called a bipart szn ticket. we have to wait until super tuesday to determine if it's biden

going to -- i remember landing in mali with john mccain, and we were driving through the airport into downtown, and we went by a big field. and i turned to john and i said, i've never seen so many crows in my life in a field. do you think those are crows or ravens, or what are they? because there was thousands and thousands of things flapping out in the field. it wasn't birds at all, it was plastic bags. and in mali, the standard means for carrying thing things for carrying things around is a black plastic bag with, and the field was just filled with them to the point where i thought an enormous block of -- flock of crows or ravens had come in. when unilever's pledge goes live, it suddenly makes sense for somebody to have a pick up all that plastic and take it in to unilever's ply chain. i think it's it's important we add an economic conversation about aligning the economic incentives, because otherwise charity isn't going to help. incentives make the difference. let me just ask ms. simon to comment briefly on that, and then i'll yield back. >> yeah, i agree. we need to create financial incentives in the system that will not only drive the --
