many legislators go on to serve as governors, like scott walker of wisconsin, john kasich of ohio, manyon to congress for the two most powerful members, john conner and eric cantor, r alec alum. their steed in the notion that entities like the nra are entitled to equal vote to change our rights. >> can you talk about the transition from clinton to bush and your role, a very interesting meeting? >> i was on the gun task force to the clinton administration after the columbine shootings in 1999. i worked on it with a team of attorneys from across the department, from the atf, fbi, u.s. attorney's office and other offices within the in ministration. when the clinton administration ended and bush became president and ashcroft came in with his team, the gun meeting continued, my job was to help with the orderly transition of government on gun policy. immediately, it was a room of 12 white guys and me. suddenly, there were a lot of political appointees, people who worked very hard on political activities for the bush administration. one of the first things that task force did was go on a shoot

john kasich's efforts to curve collective bargaining was only stopped when voters reversed the law through a ballot initiative, but conservatives haven't managed to get a right to work law passed in either state. republicans in michigan are using indiana as their model where governor mitch daniel got a right to work law passed earlier this year. rick schneider said it would boost business in his state. >> indiana's a good illustration. they did this last february. they found at least 90 different companies cited this as a factor when they contacted the indiana economic corporation and they have at least 30 that have moved ahead with projects. >> until very recentrecently scr appealed for crossover votes during that republican primary, calling it divisive. yesterday democratic lawmakers descended on the capital from washington. but both the michigan state house and senate are controlled by republicans. and this is pretty much inevitable. the labor movement has already lost these fights everywhere else. still, president obama who was making a preplanned stop at a uaw representative factory i

john kasich also had issues come up after his election. he tried to enact things in ohio. does governor snyder expect in the next election round there will be a big backlash against him as well? >> he expects, he does understand he put his feet into a tempest here if you will but governor snyder wants to draw the distinction what happened in wisconsin and what happened in ohio because this isn't about collective bargaining. this is simply what he calls freedom to work and what so many other people call right to work. this gives workers the option to choose. this gives them the option to choose whether they want to belong to union. it will put unions in the position where they need to cater to the rank-and-file instead of membership. martha: worth noting in details of this, right now if these workers don't want to join the union, still have to pay union dues anyway just to work in that place. this would change that. if you want to work there and don't want to be in the union you will not be asked to take union dues out of your paycheck either, right, mike? >> reporter: that

john kasich has done a good job there. wisconsin also competes for auto jobs as well. 6.9%.ne watson, the council woman who said, hey, president obama, bring home the bacon where. is our bailout? we voted for you. detroit city council woman. maybe they should reconsider this because it's not work. detroit is on the verge of bankruptcy and plenty of opportunity to do business in detroit, but businesses are moving away. neighbor will be an opportunity to bring business back to a struggling city. >> steve: also it would be interesting a year from now to see where union membership is. if you have the choice between joining and not joining, do you want to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year supporting unions that may not -- they wind up directing their money to various political functions that you may not support. >> gretchen: a lot of people may still want to do it. the idea is it's choice. so if you don't want to do it, you don't have to and that's what the judge was just talking about. it's your first amendment right really to be able to have the choice of wha
