let's discuss with former ohio governor john kasich.ave you on the program. >> thanks, jim. >> so, ohio used to be a swing state. in 2016 trump won 51, almost 52% to 43.7%. is this state even in play based on what you hear there in 2020? >> well, you had a former governor who did a heck of a job. seriously what happened in ohio is things got better. people were working. we expanded medicaid. people had health care. we were dealing with the issue of race in a significant way. fighting the drug problem. all of those things attributed to why do we want to change? there's a lot of that still in play now. now i know recent poll shows donald trump losing here, but to me the states that you have to keep on is michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin and whether trump is able to keep all of the states that he had the last time around in his cap, in his column. that's what you got to watch. >> what democrats did you see, governor, on the stage night one and night two that you think could actually flip ohio back and makeitlue? who could win ohio? in

this is a state that has a majority in both houses, republicans and the former governor, john kasich, told me he couldn't even get some of these things heard. and the red flag law, couldn't get it through, too. do you speak to your republican colleagues in the wake of this and say maybe this time, maybe now we can talk? >> i hope so. i've spoken off and on to some of them. because they've been here. they understand. they see it. i'm hoping when they go back and go back to work here in another week or so that they'll remember this, and do something. do something now. >> i hear you. so the republican governor as well, sitting governor of ohio, mike dewine, has come out with a list of proposals. >> yes. >> what's the top of your list? >> i think the red flag and just the common sense background checks. you know, we don't have to go crazy on this. i'm not against someone that can own a gun if they go through the background check and you're a law-abiding citizen. i have no problem with that. i believe in the second amendment. let's just not go crazy. just go common sense, for heaven's sake

bush, people who are pillars of -- john kasich. people who are pillars of the party. actively speaking out against donald trump, but what he represents is not conservatism of paul ryan of john boehner of people who were longtime stalwarts of the party. it's just not close. i want to make, don, if i can one other point. your great people built a great graphic for us. it's not just republican politicians who warned us about donald trump. we knew about donald trump. i pulled these numbers in a 2016 exit poll. so donald trump wins this election, but he wins it with 33% of people saying he's honest and trustworthy. he wins it 64 -- two-thirds of people say he wasn't honest and trustworthy. he won that election. this one is stunning to me, 38% of people saying he is qualified to serve as president. these are not current numbers, folks. this is not from a recent cnn poll. this is from the 2016 exit poll, people who had just voted. we knew what we were getting. so how does he win is the question. he wins because people want radical change and they are willing to vote for him,

this is something john kasich has done a few times. he's spoken to activists. he was second in the new hampshire primary last time. he's been a huge critic of president trump. if he has an announcement, he has not made it yet. he has been flirting against a primary challenge. he is somebody that new hampshire republicans know about as well as anybody because he did more than 100 town halls in 2016. >> dana: president trump pointed out he has a 94% rating with republicans which is extremely high. want to tell you about this story, uncanny resemblance. elizabeth warren meets her twin? >> reporter: her dopple ganger. they must be distantly related. her name was stephanie. she showed up to a warren rally with basically the same hair cut and same wardrobe that we see from warren a lot on the campaign trail. she said, actually, she felt badly because people were walking up to her in the crowd in minneapolis thanking her for running and talking about medicare for all. she had to keep telling them, no, it's not me. you see she then went and met with senator warren. if

perspective now from john kasich, also political consultant and writer.e republicans should enter the race at this point and challenge president trump even if it could potentially be career suicide? >> well, i don't know what career suicide means, john. if people want to get in and express themselves, good for them. i mean, that's -- this is america. you want to run for public office, you can do it. and, you know, what i would say is an incumbent who at this point is commanding a very high republican support, you know, they don't want to see these folks in the race. they become pesky and you have to pay attention a little bit to them. but if other people want to get in, you know, it's america. they can go ahead and get in. >> some of the candidates in there right now, it's joe walsh, william weld, and i'm not trying to diminish either of them, but there's a big gap between those two candidates and someone like mitt romney who isn't getting in right now. why do you think people are higher stature who might not be supportive of the president might not jump

joining me right now is a former republican governor of ohio, john kasich, now a cnn senior politicalommentator. thank you so much for being here. that line from the vice president is really striking when he says that trump has flat-out abandoned the notion that the country is one nation. do you think that's true? >> i agree with virtually all of what joe biden had to say in that statement. you know, kate, i wrote a book called "two paths" and it really described which way we would go in america. would we be unifying and lift people up, or would they be dividing people, would we be creating or justifying victimhood? i wrote that in a book. and you know kate, i have to just tell you -- and i've not said this on a air. a lot of people have wondered why didn't i support donald trump, why didn't i go to the convention? why did i vote for john mccain for president? why do i continue to speak out? and many of them say because he didn't win or he's bitter. that's all nonsense. what is happening now and what we are seeing is exactly what i was concerned about. and kate, i talk to republicans

presidential election not for hillary clinton, who won the popular vote in colorado, but actually for john kasich said they're going to throw out the vote, put somebody else in for you and make that person vote for hillary clinton. so he sued saying, how can you possibly make me do that? how can you divest me of my opportunity to exercise my vote as a member of the electoral college, and the 10th circuit in colorado agreed and said, you know what? the constitution says that's your vote. you get to exercise it the way that you want to, and that's what ends up counting. >> so what does it moon in teeas of legal challenges? we know oftentimes these come down and there's a challenge pushing back. will we see it again. >> the constitution will trump, no pun intended, any of the challenge goes that come from the state. from a legal perspective there's a recent packt of states that accumulated 185 electoral votes that want to say popular vote will dictate who get the electoral college. you will have other states that will say, hey, how are you divesting me from my vote from your own state's vote. >> cou
