john boehner has broken off talks with the president over raising the debt ceiling. that drew a sharp and immediate response from president obama this evening. nbc's kelly o'donnell has late details now on where things stand. kelly? >> reporter: good evening, lester, a major meltdown in these talks to keep the kun friday from going into a default. boehner sent a letter to house members explaining that those talks were off and that the negotiations would come back to capitol hill with a goal of solving that this weekend. well, president obama was clearly angry. he made a surprise appearance in the briefing room and the blame game began. clearly upset, the president said he thought he had given a fair deal to house republicans and felt he was left at the altar. >> this was an extraordinarily fair deal. if it was unbalanced, it was unbalanced in the direction of not enough revenue. it is hard to understand why speaker boehner would walk away from this kind of deal and, frankly, if you look at the commentary out there, there are a lot of republicans that are puzzled as to why it couldn't get done. >> reporter: speaker boehner says he can explain that, and h

kelly has been kind enough to join us from houston. captain, as you hear, people are trying to put a good face on this new era of so-called commercial space travel. i interviewed john glen, a man you may have seen around the how was a few days back, he says america's making a very big mistake, do you agree? >> well, you know, i think what's important, brian is that, you know, what happened was about a year and a half ago, we made a decision to go with this commercial route and it was very controversial, we had the augustine commission that made a lot of recommendations and the decision was to proceed with smaller companies to provide commercial first cargo and then crew access to space. and i think what's important at this point is that we embrace that and make this work. because, you know, that's what we have now, it's going to take a while before we're flying people in space again, but we could really make this successful. >> a little tough to get used to the idea that the russians are, for you, our ride for american astronauts into space? >> yeah, that is tough to get used to. but it's not the first time we have been in a similar situation without a spacecraft.

kelly. we are learning president obama met privately with two leading republicans sunday. house speaker johner and majority leader eric cantor. the president says it's working. bret baier joins me now. this is interesting. after last week's big public meeting where there were cameras and lots of lawmakers and photo opportunities and that didn't go so well. now our private meeting the answer? >> they have been happening. we knew speaker boehner had a couple of them and there had been a couple talks between president obama and speaker boehner. the fact that they met privately over the weekend with the president we don't know exactly how much they hammered out as far as details. but hearing from the white house that this meeting went well, and you just heard the president saying what he said about progress is being made. that said, when you go up to capitol hill and you talk to lawmakers there is a divide here over what is happening and whether progress is being made. because as you know, the cut, cap and balance bill will be vote on in the house tomorrow. we get word from the white house that

kelly. what has unfolded so far in the most dramatic 72 hours of this crisis yet. you have last friday at 6:00pm house speaker john boehner said he ended negotiations with president obama on the grand bargain. on the same evening president obama accused boehner from watching away from a deficit deal they arrived at, ordering leaders from both the house and senate to come become on saturday morning to the house for negotiations. then you got to saturday. boehner then announced that he wanted to raise the debt ceiling eye 2:00pm on sunday. we know that never happened. later that day both senate majority leader henry reid and john boehner exchanges fiery words on what would be best to bring down this ballooning debt that has caused all this worry. on sunday there was no deal on the table but the speaker mess with house republicans in less than an hour we could get some sort of announce the on how this is form hraeugt now. formulating now. chris stirewalt, fox news political editor joins me now. there may have been some bill presented to the house, that they presented something that was shot down, what are you hearing
