[applause] ♪ >> ambassador kennedy, jack, members of the selection committee, trustees of the john f.rary foundation, thank you. this is an extraordinary honor to be here with you to celebrate the work on the life of president kennedy, whose life and legacy directly inspired my own path in hopes that public service could lead to a better world. i went to college up the street. and it was there where i connected my love of history and policy to an interesting leadership in public service. but it was here at this library where i was inspired through learning about the ways in which president kennedy led our country and accounts for his leadership to transform that interest into a desire to seek justice, fight for equality, and serve with courage. on one of my visits i purchased a poster in the gift shop. in it, president kennedy is sitting, conferring with his brother bobby. heads bowed, facing each other. i love that image because to me it captures the salinity of service, the gravity of selfless sacrifice. the weight of courage. it's an image that captured who i hoped to be, fearlessl
