susan: john, your latest biography is "ted kennedy: a life." ease sum up the man and politician in a couple of seconds. john: he wa a u.s. senator who succeeded despite serious flaws and a life, a tormented life filled with tragedy. that is how i would describe him. susan: you write in the book that his life is a lens to examine the cause. explain. john: jfk came into the office as something of a centrist. his father had worked on fdr's new deal so they had roof -- they had roots in the left but the movements of the 1960's, the feminist movement, the antiwar movement, they adopted the positions and became martyrs to the position, becoming symbols of the american left. ted had more than 40 years in the senate and you can see the things he fought for and against and it becomes liberalism from fdr's death up until the most recent time of hyper polarization. susan: does his brand of liberalism exist today? john: no. i would say the berer folks are probably more enthusia and extreme than he was and the moderates in the party are a little more tempera

john kennedy, president kennedy did not feel he had a mandate when he was elected. it was a very close election. we can debate forever. you know, whether well, he won. there's no question john kennedy chose republicans for important parts of his administration. his secretary of defense as a republican, his national security advisor was a republican. his. he kept on the same director of central intelligence, allen dulles, a republican. he kept j. edgar hoover neanderthal at the fbi. so and and so this is this is an important, important part of the part of the story. so that that the president understood landing of of of decisions that would get and would sort of be accepted to all americans, certainly his approach. who was the most famous, most popular, most beloved republican in the united states in 1962? it was dwight eisenhower and dwight eisenhower wasn't actually just a beloved republicans, a beloved american. he had enormous prestige. so many americans had fought under him. world war two, all american of a certain age, remember him as of the great victors of th

john f. kennedy made the trip, and there are many who believe it was to mend the fences between senator yarborough, a very liberal democrat, and lyndon johnson, a more moderate democrat vice president at the time. in fact, if the president wanted to mend those fences, he could have done so in washington were both of them live. he didn't have to go to texas, their home state. in actuality, i think kennedy's real motivation to coming here was to raise money. put money in the democratic warchest for the coming election in 1964. john conolly, the governor at the time, and then barnes, who was a rising star in the democratic party here in texas assured president kennedy that if you were to come to texas, that he could raise $1 million for the democratic cause. that was a lot of money in 1960. 19 623, excuse me. i meant the 1964. i think that compelled jack kennedy not only to come to austin, but to go to houston, to san antonio, to fort worth, and to dallas and of course, as you mentioned, he was supposed
