john kerry, scott brown, and other congressmen have formed the cranberry caucus. the caucus plans to educate members of congress and their staffs, federal agencies about the importance of cranberries. kerry's berries talked up the health benefits about the superfruit. the thing is this isn't all about health. it's about money. the cranberry industry is massachusetts's biggest food crop and employees 5,000 people and brings in $50 million a year. massachusetts produces 2 million barrels of cranberries a year which is 25% of the total in the country. only wisconsin is ahead of massachusetts in cranberry production. maybe you can get a bipartisan congress to solve all their problems. why have a caucus now? one word, sugar. governments have been cracking down on sugary drinks. the cranberry industry is worried they might get caught up in it. you need a lot of sugar. anyone who has mane cranberry sauce knows that. cranberry juice is lumped in with soda which is bad news for the industry. which is one of the reasons that john kerry now considers cranberries a pressing i
