sitting in for john king this evening. we begin tonight with what looks like a new sexuality case against dominique strauss kanne back in his home country, france. new york case against the former headst international monetary fund appears to be falling apart. prosecutors on friday revealed the hotel maid who has accused him of attempted rape has severe credibility issues. but back in his native france, a lawyer for a young woman says he may file a sexuality criminal complaint against strauss kanne as early as tomorrow. cnn's jim bitterman has the story from paris. >> reporter: his legal problems may not be over. a 32-year-old journalist says that back in 2003, she was sexually assaulted by strauss kanne when she went to interview him. she says at the time she was talked out of filing charges by her mother who was a mid level socialist party member. and the mother says now that she regrets talking her daughter out of filing those charges. now the lawyers says after the developments in new york they decided to go ahead and

prosecutor jeff ashton talked to john king on john king usa coming up at the top of the hour for ourback with jack calf ter fee with some answers. jack? >> the cost of higher education simply becoming prohibitive because of all of the state budget cuts? state colleges and universities are having to jack up tuitions in some cases more than 20%. kay writes, as long as we have an expectation of getting a degree in four years. a lot of students young and not so long have worked their way through college over a period of many years although i would love to see tuition at a more reasonable level higher education still attainable for those who pursue their dreams with dogged determination. and in the early '60s, i was enrolled at texas university in denton, texas. my tuition was $500 a semester. the cost of education has gone up because most universities are top heavy and they need to address that issue before they address anything else. tom writes from texas, it seems that way. you're either a wall streeter, a banker, or handing out food orders through drive-up windows. georgia writes, i l

in north america john king usa starts right now. >>> thanks, joe. good evening. casey anthony arrived in court this morning facing the death penalty. tonight, she is preparing for freedom, cleared by a jury of allegations she murdered her 2-year-old girl, caylee, and tossed her body into the woods. after a seven-week trial that drew national attention that is a social media fphenomenon, the 12 jurors deliberated a little more than 12 hours. not guilty of first-degree murder of a child. now, casey anthony was convicted of four misdemeanor accounts of giving false information to police investigating the diabolical murder of 2-year-old caylee in 2008. that charge carries a maximum prison sentence of one year in prison. so do the math. casey anthony has been in jail for roughly 32 months, so if the judge took the rare step of imposing the maximum for each count, she faces at most another 16 months behind bars, but many believe she could walk free as early as thursday when the trial judge will hold a sentencing hearing. here's how it it played out in the courtroom. >>

john king is off tonight, i'm jessica yellin. tonight there is a growing sense the united states is facing what democratic officials say is an imminent threat of default. in just a couple of hour, president obama is expected to make that point when he speaks to the nation to talk about what happens if there is no compromise on raising the debt ceiling, and the stakes all of us face if the u.s. actually defaults a week from tomorrow. he'll also say this problem is easily fixable, and talk about the different approaches congress can take. but up on capitol hill tonight, lawmakers already are committed to trying two brand new and very different approaches. one from democrats in the senate, the other from house republicans. but there's a big problem. neither of those plans may be able to get through congress and the clock is ticking. cnn congressional correspondent kate boulwan joins us now. let's start in the house where speaker john boehner has laid out his version of the republican solution. spell it out for us. >> reporter: a lot

i'm jessica yellin, john king is off. we've got breaki ining news on eve of the milestone in our country's future. the house of representatives is supposed to vote tomorrow on speaker john boehner's short-term plan to raise the debt limit and cut about a trillion dollars in spending. but just a few minutes ago the speaker announced he plans to rewrite the bill because it does not cut enough spending. cnn congressional correspondent kate bolduan joins us now from capitol hill, what is the latest? >> reporter: you know the cbo numbers, the congressional budget office, jessica, this office that scores, gives a cost estimate, for legislation, it's very critical, and this evening it came out the cbo brought out -- gave out its estimate, and it says that the speaker boehner's bill falls short of what its target was. it says that it would only reduce the deficit by $850 billion, rather than the more than a trillion dollars than the legislation said it was going to -- said it was going to. here's why it's such a big problem. beca

. >> john king is here. it is interesting. the president is going to be in the briefing room. he is out of the east room where there would be a dramatic announcement. this is just sort of a surprise in the middle of these tough negotiations. he has decided to go public to try to put pressure on us. >> i am not surprised. i find it interesting that before they go pack back to mee 2:00 in the afternoon, he is coming out of here to talk about the state of play. the president can go directly to the american people and say, if we put this on the table, what will be interesting to watch, wolf, is exactly how he describes the state of negotiations? we know when things fall apart, the president will tell you, because he is going to back to his political corner. if things are viable, we want to hear the tone from the president. we have to watch and see what that tone is going to be and whether he can reach a deal. >> john boehner, the number two republican in the house are the majority leader, eric cantor, because they don't always seem to be on the same page. >> no. they seem to not a

jessica yellin is at the white house tonight, john king in our washington bureau along with chief political analyst gloria borger. here to help me explain the ins and outs of your money is alley velshi. john, what is the latest? is nothing actually happening at the capitol right now? >> we talked a bit about this last night. and we are making progress if you view planting the flags as progress. the house finally had the vote today. the proposal went to the senate. it is now dead. leader reid is going to have his proposal. forgive me. i'm not criticizing senator reid but he's now doing exactly the same thing house republicans did. he knows his plan cannot be the final plan yet he is going to have the motions. we're going through a debate over the weekend. if you considerate least moving the ritual forward we're making some progress. are they negotiating behind the scenes? i was having conversation, with democratic and republican aides who said not yet. they expect those conversations to start over the weekend. there is still a sense of optimism, not bubbly optimism, that they'll figure this
