our chief national correspondent john king got a look at what's left of that school. know it was very painful for you, for our crews, everybody going anywhere near that school to see what you had to see. >> as a journalist, as a parent, as a human being, you show up at this site, wolf, and you see what's left of this school, then you have the structure described for you. it was shaped like a u. essentially part of the crossbar is still there, the two legs are gone. and you see the swathe of the destruction in the enabled and at the school, then you take a walk through, and you're humbled and saddened, look at the destruction. seven of ten children that died in moore perished there at that school. when you walk through, when viewers get a look at the devastation at that site, it is a miracle that so many moore children and teachers survived. >> where did everybody go? >> we surrounded the school, started to run into different areas. some has been cleaned out due to search and rescue efforts. literally climbing over debris. people were yelling for help, just pulling peop

what they did with that description was, john king from cnn said, i know people will find this sensitive but i'm going to good ahead on and say this incredibly inaccurate and vague description anyway. i think there's a reason why journalists and journalism organizations -- i teach at the pointer institute offer, as i said i'm on the media monitoring committee for the national association of black journalist. there's reason why we tell nut outlets not to use this scrip tore because when we found the try identities of the suspects they weren't darked skipped. they were from an area of unthat were the caucuses mountains, and that's where caution indications came from. it encouraging racial profiling and we want descriptions to be accurate. we want people to have the accurate information they need to identify. threats in their neighborhood to help the police and to help themselves, and if you're passing along a description so vague and misleading it leads people to focus hone wrong suspects anyway, what's the point. and so it's not about hurt feelings. it's not about doing the right thing. i

but, first, the latest from john king who joins us now. >> reporter: remarkably, anderson, 30, 31 hours after the storm hit moore, they say they are just about done. a few is to dot and ts to cross. they're essentially done with three sweeps, three sweeps through each of these communities. they've gone back and forth, back and forth. i was out with search and rescue until about 2:00 a.m. this morning. at daybreak, we met someone, we talk about the first responders, the storm cellars. reena and paul phillips, they rebuilt their home after the 1999 tornado. the storm hit eight of them, including a 2-year-old grandchild go down into the cellar. they say when the first responders came through, they heard them screaming. listen to a bit of their story. >> it was loud. and windy. and, you know, but once it was over, our cellar started filling up with water on both sides. and that's when the grand baby started panicking. >> reporter: it must have been pretty scary. >> it was scary, but we knew we were getting out. we may have been walking in a little water, but we knee we'd get out. the people

so let me go to john king with latest. john? >> chris, i'm not all that far from you in another part of moore. as you know, the rains have turned heavy. look up in the distance, the sky's lighter. this is an inconvenience for many families. you can start to see, people have started to come back. today they decided to come back to their homes to search through. a woman behind the wall, you can't see her, trying to find precious belongings, see if there's anything to preserve. what's fascinating and sad about this the wideness of the swath. this house here destroyed, children's play things here, literally wrapped into the tree. it goes on and on and on. earlier we were 3/4 of a mile here in the plaza towers neighborhood. as residents came back to their home to find things a remarkable story from rina phillips, her neighborhood is flattened, all houses are destroyed. she was in the house when they heard the storm coming. eight members of her family, including a 2-year-old gra grandchild went down to the storm basement. listen how i

i want to get our chief national political correspondent john king to chime in on this as well.ust said about the politics of it all, whether it was politics at the offices of the irs or politics in the committee hearing room today, how much of what we were seeing today, john, was actually a search for the truth of something that really could be massive and how much of this was just something albeit bipartisan chest bumping? >> it's a little bit of both. look, congress, whether you have a democrat or a republican president or a democrat or a republican house or senate, it is the job of the legislative branch to conduct oversight of the executive branch. ashleigh, we can go back to weapons of mass destruction, franny, freddie, many other issues that caused our country and government problems and say, maybe we might have been better off if we had a more congressional oversight. we should applaud good congressional oversight. they should find out what happened whoond did it at the irs. that's what the committee is about today. senate summitts will get it. this will br be with us th

. >> chief national correspondent john king at a staging area where the search-and-rescue teams they're being sent out here. john, we are just, really, it its heartbreaking. we are getting bad news as the evening and morning hours progress here. is there any sense of what you are seeing? of the possibility of survivors? >> despair and exhaustion and there is some hope, yes, i am at a christian church, abundant life church, and the sign is so fitting, it says, when you have had all you can stand, kneel. a fit saying on this night. a lot of people are kneeling, exhausted. and there are some in the community missing loved ones. hoping out at the community church. hoping for word. and several teams of first responders here. i was with several teams from a nearby fire department, they organized into small groups, a half dozen or so. mostly fire department, national guard people along with them and others and sent out on what the captain described as a search, rescue, and recovery. the uncertainty. they're still hoping, search-and-rescues. but the team thousands, first responders are, also, c

i want to bring in chief national correspondent john king. folks in the plaza towers neighborhood not far from one of the schools that was hit. >> just a remarkable story.you? it looks like this. there are hundreds of them. home site after home site and they are devastated. paul and rita phillips were in their home yesterday and lost everything in 199. they call that may 3rd. already folks are calling this may 20th. they lost everything. one big difference. when they rebuilt this time they put in a little storm basement below the house. when they heard the storm coming they got down there, eight of them, rita the grandmother, 2-year-old grandchild. they talked about how loud it was in there and they talked about just how remarkable. listen to their story about being in there and waiting. we've seen the first responders coming through. imagine waiting just after it hit. >> where were you when it happened? >> i was in the celler with my daughter, my daughter-in-law who is pregnant. >> the cellar full of water now. that's what they came out of.

. >> joining us now our chief political analyst gloria borger and chief national correspondent john king. gloria, so this damage control effort is under way by the administration. >> you think? >> is it working? >> well, it is certainly hard to know right now, wolf. if you look at it from the public's point of view the president has a point which is the public doesn't like the irs. it probably doesn't like members of congress much more than the irs. so this is a fight where to them at least there's kind of no hero. maybe there is a villain and if they find the obama administration is at fault. so the president has no choice at this point but to try and pivot on it. i'm told at a meeting yesterday with outside strategists, you know, they said to the president get out of town. maybe do some town halls. try to talk to real people out there and focus them back on your agenda. that's all that he can do right now and hope republicans over reach. >> in effect trying to change the subject. >> trying to change the subject. the timing here is damning for the president because of where we are. we'r

joining us now our chief national correspondent john king.ef political analyst gloria borger. and the senior correspondent for "time" magazine our sister publication michael crowley. thanks very much for coming in. how much pressure is the white house under to deliver some answers? >> i think they're under more pressure today than they were a couple days ago. you had a very compelling witness at that hearing yesterday. somebody who had been a career foreign service officer for 22 years describing the desolation and the sort of sense of being abandoned by his government the night of that attack, giving on-the-ground details about the support they asked for and couldn't get for whatever reason. this hearing with a credible witness served the purpose of raising a lot of questions which is what the republicans really wanted to do stirring the pot so the administration is being called upon to answer more questions about what occurred that night. look, they already admitted there were systemic failures there. the question republicans want answered
