for a by the numbers look, we're joined by john king. >> dramatic drop for mr. trump. debate drew 23 million viewers and just before the debate, donald trump cracked 32%. this is the first national poll that shows donald trump going down. now down to 24%. beneficiary, carly fiorina, mark cow rubio up from 3% to 11% and trump went down and ben carson went down to 14%. let's take a closer look at why donald trump is in decline at the moment. here is a big number. 41% tea party support before the debate. just 29% after. that's a big part of the republican base. 32% of white evangelicals, 28% after. something to keep an eye on. support among republican women, carly fiorina surged and had a strong showing and a little among republican men. this is a test in any political campaign, newcomers, politics get adversity and donald trump testing time. we'll see if he can turn it around. >> dr. carson surged to second. why is he slipping to third? >> slip income third place because the other outsider carly fiorina took not only from donald trump the businessman and dr. ben carson,

john king is joining us here. john you spend a lot of time in washington d.c. but this visit is unlike any we've previously seen. >> and you make an important point. for those of us who's first inni instinct to get immediately into the politics i think we should sit back and enjoy the drama. and i love the fiat. the statement the holy father is making just by getting into a modest fiat speaks volumes as to the message he wants to convey and he does this of course as he travels the world and as he travels the grounds of the vatican. as we await this moment though we are of course at the dawn of the presidential campaign. perhaps deeper into it than we should be this early on. let's bring in the cnn commentators. maria, i want to start with you. this is his first visit to the united states. he is the first pope from latin america. >> yes. >> what do you make of the -- the moment welfabefore the poli? >> i think the moment is one that we can all embrace. whether a democrat, republican, agnostic or atheist. i think what he's been so special about this pope is that

john king lays out the state of the race right now on both sides by the numbers, john, bernie sanders within striking distance of hillary clinton. break town the numbers for us. >> a competitive race in the state where hillary clinton went off the rails in 2007, 2008. at the moment, hillary clinton leading with 37%. bernie sanders now in striking distance, 30%. this is significant because of the math, and now hillary clinton is below for the first time. there has to be jitters. he is within striking distance. democrats, this is good news for hillary clinton. 61% of democrats in iowa say the e-mail controversy is not important to them. you could make the argument that 38% think it is important to them. for bernie sanders, 96% of his supporters say they are supporting him because they like him and his ideas. only 2% say this is a rejection of hillary clinton. the supporters for sand east aren't in an anticlinton mood. one more point. the democrats in iowa like their field. use the president as the benchmark. 88% favorable among democrats. joe biden, hillary clinton, and bernie sanders,

john king joins us now with the late details on that as well as new polling on the democratic side. a lot of ground to cover. let's start off with scott walker. >> bad debate performances and inconsistent in answers and didn't impress conservatives and thought he might be their guy. a number of reasons. he actually peaked in march. you might say that's not a ton but in the moment where he was a contender for a bit. look at the slide going down. this is what killed him, after the cnn debate he went to an asteric from 16% to barely registering. the peak in march he was considered the alternative, this is pretrump considered the alternative to jeb bush and lead income iowa nationally 20% among men and 1% now. 12% among republican women, doesn't register anymore and 12% in the tea party. doesn't register. fighting the unions in wisconsin a conservative hero. doesn't register anymore and fell through the floor in part because of trump and poor performance. >> let's look at the rest of the gop. >> it's not just governor walker. you heard him calling on candidates to get out. trump down af

commentator mike rogers, former republican congre congressman, also chief national correspondent john king joins us who's host of cnn's "inside politics" and chief political analyst, gloria borger. john, we're going to see donald trump on this decommissioned "uss iowa." you know, you think back to obviously president bush on an aircraft carrier. you think of michael dukakis on a tank. it can be a tricky thing to have, to use a military facility as a backdrop. especially for a guy who, you know, had a number of deferments and hasn't really put much meat on the bone in terms of specifics. >> it can be a tricky thing if we apply what we know from past campaigns. if we've learned anything about donald trump, we should be very careful about applying anything we know from past campaigns. for george w. bush, remember, he flew onto the aircraft carrier. he was in the flight suit. he had the mission accomplished banner. after the fact when things went south in iraq, turned out that event was a debacle. former president bush has noted that and said the staff made a big mistake putting the banner up

chief national correspondent john king has them. let's look at democratic candidates. where do they stand? >> let me bring up the numbers. bad news, bad night for the clinton campaign. nationally lead at 37%. see vermont, bernie sanders, 27%. vice president, 20%. martin o'malley, 3%. and 37% now, where hillary clinton is. talked last hour how donald trump is a growth stock. hillary clinton, 58% a couple months ago. lost 20 points. bernie sanders, plateaued at 27% there. vice president up a little bit. if you are in the clinton kachl pain. national numbers, a seen of trouble. warning sign. sanders again on the rise at the moment. joe biden not so bad. if you look at hillary clinton support. here is a problem for her. 31% of democratic men support hillary clinton. the gender gap is playing to her advantage. support, 41% of democratic women sam. port clinton. very interesting divide in the democratic race. among those who describe themselves as liberal. 23% support clinton. half of those who say moderate. bernie sanders support. he gets nearly half of those who say they'r
