i want to bring in now cnn's john king. mr. john king, hello to you. donald trump has been slipping in the polls ever since the convention. but of particular importance is those swing states. what's the latest on that? >> without a doubt. particular importance to swing states. what he's hoping is this isis speech today can get him back on track because hillary clinton has been gaining and gaining consistently. let's look here. these are six of your traditional battleground states. in a close presidential election, camp out in these six, you tend to figure out who's going to win. at the moment hillary clinton leads in all of them. by average, plus three in florida, by average plus two in ohio. by average plus four in north carolina. plus eight in new hampshire. double digits in virginia. double digits in colorado. look at that. donald trump has to turn some blue states red, don, from the 2012 map. the obama/romney map to change them. this is a generous presentation for mr. trump in the sense more recent polls in these states have hillary clinton's lead

john king here to break it down by the numbers. al numbers bad for donald trump today and not much solace in the state numbers. >> not at all, john. you heard jason carroll saying it was just a bounce. when you talk to republicans it's worse than a bounce. let's look at some of the numbers and let's look at pennsylvania. most people, even inside the trump campaign, they think he needs to win. there is an 11-point lead right now for secretary clinton in the key battleground state. remember that, 11 points in pennsylvania. if he can't get pennsylvania or dependent on the rust belt, he would need michigan. a healthy lead and nine points there for secretary clinton. in the detroit news poll, two midwest battleground polls there, new hampshire, only four electoral votes and in a close election that can matter. you see a healthy lead there for secretary clinton, as well. up here in the north, florida, donald trump says this is his second home and 29 electoral votes and hard to get donald trump to 270 if he can't get florida. this is the c

john king joins me again to break down by the numbers. turn the tide on this particular demographic? >> he needs to, anderson, if he's going to be competitive and win the election. we've done this before when you get new data, you look at it. is there any evidence that donald trump is improving? look right now, among white college graduates, donald trump and hillary clinton essentially running even, 41% for donald trump, 40% for hillary clinton. you see the third party candidates getting a a combined 16% right here. roughly even, right. look at this. mitt romney lost in 2012. he beat president obama by 14 points among white college graduates. he won by 14 points and he lost the election. donald trump running about even right now. i don't think anybody at home needs me to explain, if you are running -- if you're donald trump, you're running 15 points among white college grads behind the guy who lost in 2012, that's not good. >> national numbers are obviously one thing. you know, elections are won in battleground states. where does the educ

john king, let's start out with you. for all of the shake-ups of the trump campaign, the trump campaign says there hasn't been a shake-up and we've seen in the last day or so this does seem as close to a pivot and certainly a different kind of speech from donald trump. >> well, a bit of a surprise off the top. a lot of people look at the breitbart executive and says he will be more aggressive and drag up every possible skeleton and fictitious skeleton in the clinton closet and he said i've said a lot of things that i regret. i've said a lot of things because i'm not politically correct. if i've caused personal pain those are the ones i regret the most and this is one speech, anderson. we should all take a breath and the democrats will say we did go over the last year or so and the non-democratic critics will find plenty of things you said and why do you get to apologize or almost apologize with one sentence. is that good enough? that will be part of the conversation and this is a well-crafted political speech. he's sayin

john king explains. >> make some magic. this is 2012.e popular vote for president obama but a thumping over mitt romney in the electoral college. if you're donald trump, you not only need to change some of the blue states red, you need to change the dynamics of the election. one thing you cannot do is underperform mitt romney with key constituencies. one of the big changes in the campaign, one of the reasons we know donald trump is in a ditch because if you look at this constituency here, this is back to election day 2012. white college grads, mitt romney with a 14-point lead over barack obama. now, republicans always win the white vote. but mitt romney had a huge lead over barack obama among white college grads. a critical constituency. you find a lot in the key suburbs who tend to decide swing states. big edge for mitt romney, one thing that makes this campaign interesting and donald trump's challenge even greater in the final weeks. hillary clinton leads. this is our national cnn/orc poll. an 11-point lead among white college educated
