let's go to john king for an update. >> 28 reporting in the 9th district of north carolina.tes favored the democrats. now as votes are coming in, republicans got a little bit closer. still, if you're a democrat, you're happy with with what you say. only 2% of the vote. if that margin dan mccready, it will probably hold up. we'll see as the night goes on. the republican in district two is winning by nowhere near the margin. president trump carried it in 2016. here's where your population is, county number three, the democrat ahead by a pretty good margin. president trump won this in the presidential race. it was close in robeson county but dan mccready putting up a pretty healthy lead. the fourth largest county includes the fayetteville sub b subur suburbs. if that may hastays blue democr will have some celebrating but we'll keep counting. >> and let's go to chris cuomo. >> they should win, republicans should win in this district. what we saw that makes an interesting race is what happened in the mid terms, that you saw this kind of 12-point margin that could be closed becaus

let's go to john king who has been looking at the numbers. john?, the early numbers quite interesting. the democrat dan mccready winning the race so far. about 22% of the vote counted. that's a pretty healthy lead for the democrat in a district the republicans have held since 1963, in a district the president in 2016 carried by 12 points. so this is a big deal. the biggest county is mecklenburg county over here. this is the charlotte area here. charlotte's not in the district, but the suburbs here, dan mccready is ahead. back in 2016, president trump carried this part of the district. so that's a big deal. this is about 30% of the vote. move over to union county, the second biggest county in the district. bishop is winning but not by the size of the margin president trump did. you come to the other end of the district over here in the fayetteville suburbs, cumberland county, mccready up again. this is a test. president trump underperformed in the suburbs in 2016. republicans got crushed in the suburbs in 2018. that's why nancy pelosi is speaker. if

so let's bring in john king to give us the state of play. what is the latest, my friend? >> the latest is dan mccready, the democrat, continuing to lead in this race. i want to emphasize we're still counting. 38% reporting in the 9th district. this should be a rock solid republican district. they've held it since 1963. president trump carried it by 12 points. but will 2018 carry over? will the republican party's problems in the suburbs carry over? will presidential visits not have the juice in let's take a look at some of the district here. this is the largest part of the district. the county goes out a bit further. hillary clinton carried m meklanberg county. the count that is north carolina 9, not by a lot but the president carried it. what are we seeing tonight so far? dan mccready, democrat, carrying it by a lot. only 4% in meklenburg county. can mccready hold a lead anything like that in the biggest part of the district? that is the defining question at the moment. union county is the second largest county. we're up to 67% there. you look at that and say dan bishop d

i'm manu raju in for john king. hurricane dorian is closing in on the bahamas. it is slowing down, lurking off the florida and southeastern coastline for much of the week. we will go to the latest forecast in just a bit. we have to start with yet another mass shooting, this time the west texas cities of midland and odessa. five people are dead, 21 injured. the suspect shot dead by police. authorities say it started saturday afternoon with a traffic stop on interstate 20 near midland. the man used a rifle to shoot at state troopers, then sped away, taking random shots at passing cars and pedestrians, hijacking a postal vehicle and making his way to odessa, still spraying done fire. the chase ended with a gun battle in a movie theater parking lot. >> there's a shooting going on in odessa, texas. oh, god they're shooting again.
