. >> senator -- rep john larson joins us here on "newsmakers" this morning. >> two years ago democrats were talking about increasing public spending to increase jobs that way. now you are talking about a $4 trillion package in spending cuts that will create jobs. politically, how did democrats go from spending to create to cutting to create? >> i have to say, i have not been talking about the $4 trillion debt cut. but this is something that we look at back at home routinely. how did we get here? how did we go from a $5 trillion surplus on our way to paying off the national debt in 2009 only to find ourselves in 2008 in the middle of an economic catastrophe. when we got here by not paying for and creating an awful lot of debt. not paying for two wars. not paying for big rates, big cuts to forma, medicaid. not paying for to act -- for tax cuts. the president found himself $10 trillion in hole in dealing with the worst recession since the great depression, as well as having to come up with money for a recovery. where did those moneys go? most of them went to help states and municipalities

joining us right now is john larson with the norwegian red cross. me an idea of how the red cross is able to help. >> well, this has made a huge impact on the city center, so we have immediately set down a crisis team from the norwegian red cross branch in oslo. we are now in dialogue with the oslo city council and oslo police offering first aiders, more rescue teams, ambulance, and possible caretakers because it's many, many people wandering around in the streets right now. >> have you been to the scene of this explosion? >> no, i have not been able to do so because there's a crisis team. >> what are first responders informing you about in terms of how people are able to get some me need and what people are doing? >> so far it seems like the national rescue teams have done a very good job. we saw immediately caretakers involved, ambulances that were quickly on the spot and reports from hospitals. we do not have any requests from hospitals, but we are offering our services both at the hospitals and in the streets of oslo at that. >> some of the memb

. >>> and now for much more on the situation, we're joined on the phone by john larson with the norwegians. john, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. can you let us know how the situation there is at this hour? >> well, first of all, this has been an extremely terrible day for everyone in oslo and everyone in norway. it's the first time we are experiencing anything like this in our nation. the situation is a bit calmer now in the city center. and the official rescue team has done what looks like is a very good job in bringing injured to hospitals. >> how many injured, john? we're understanding from the oslo police that seven have been killed, two seriously wounded. do you have any other information on the injuries for us? >> i don't have an accurate number of injuries. but what i can say is that we are now mobilizing to respond to many people in shock and in fear. and we'll continue throughout the night and the weekend to open red cross branchs and houses for people to -- and offer them psychological support and friendship. >> what about the hospitals there? do they have enoug
