professor john lewis gaddis is joining us next to the history and biography tenth. welcome to booktv on c-span2. we have taken two calls already. i want to see if you have any response to these callers. the first caller asked about lester brown and his books. not sure if you are familiar with his books that he talked about the upcoming potential global wars such as a war over fresh water. >> guest: who can say? it seems to me in some ways we have always had these kinds of risks out there, risks of war over natural resources of one kind or another. many people think they are because population is increasing exponentially. if you look at population trends in many parts of the world the population has -- birth rates have begun to drop dramatically. i am not convinced this is automatic that there will be these kinds of wars. for that happened there would have to be these huge growths in population and it may be modern technology operating in other ways is contributing to a decline in that. one may offset the other. >> host: how much if any of the cold war was about natu

so you have people like congressman john lewis, longtime civil rights leader, who are saying this is the civil rights battle of our time now. the same fight we had in 1965, the same marchers when john lewis was beaten in alabama, this is occurring today. it is a different discussion now than it was back then, but nonetheless, the urgency to defend their right to vote is there and the black community. i would argue in the hispanic community and on college campuses, like it was in some sense during the civil rights era. it took a long time to get people to pay attention to this issue. this is something when i wrote about in september, 2011, and not allow people were covering. i think people are now more aware of this issue. you've seen the court strike down a lot of these laws for violating the voting rights act or violating the first amendment or violating other parts of the constitution, right to vote provisions of state constitutions. it is a wake-up call. it is motivated people in ways that perhaps could backfire against republicans, because in some states there is going to be a mo

when i think of voting rights in addition to john lewis, i think ofxd all of those long lines th i saw-hum. >> peopleÑi standing in line, n a single registration was required, the whole idea of requiring people to register to been ñrundemocratic, right? i mean in this day of çó technology, we ought not be requiring people to register, we ought not be requiring that they be in the state that they vote in. i mean none of that, i mean we can track people. i mean, if we can find somebody in pakistan -- >> in a hole. >> -- we can figure out whether somebody is eligible to vote without them having to march down with a damned utility bill. come on. >> i find it hard to believe that, and with the free i.d.s, i'm still not going to -- i have a problem with the way the debate is being framed as when black americans want to travel, when they want to buy over-the-counter drugs, when they want to buy prescriptions, when they want to go to nightclubs -- you can boo me until the cows come home -- we find an i.d. and only 40% of americans even bother to vote. >> i've been trying to be very non-violent

well i think if john lewis wins you'll see a lot of the same of what he's done you know the reason that he might win is that people's living standards of improved enormously over the past thirteen years the you know the poverty has been reduced since they got control of the oil industry in two thousand or two thousand and three but you can take two thousand four years to be sure poverty has fallen by half and extreme poverty by seventy percent and one is about unemployment is about half what it was before he was aware that you could look at any measure access to health care is increase for millions of people education you have no free college education for millions of college in rome and has doubled the number of people eligible for public pensions is four times as much as it used to be so i think jobs will continue to expand the welfare state at the least and we don't know what else the government will be capable. of as a certainly known as the mad all the people in venezuela now let's look at his presidential campaign it's been mobbed by an information storm i gained simming the inter
