was a year that stokely carmichael took over the student nonviolent coordinating committee from john lewis, the great civil rights icon. it was the year the black panthers were formed in oakland, california. it was also the year when a lot of young black folks said we don't want to be called negros anymore, started wearing afros, the -- dashikis, and the first-year kwanzaa was celebrated. >> why the phrase black power become en vogue? >> the phrase in -- the phrase itself had been popularized by carmichael in a march across mississippi called the narrative march. it was sort of the sequel to the soma march of 1965. and in the middle of this march at a late-night rally, he had been thrown in jail by the local cops for setting up a tent for the marchers to sleep. he gets out of jail and there's a field full of people who had been on the march and young black people and he stood up and said we have been talking now for a decade about freedom now. we have to start talking about black power. all of a sudden, this crowd heard this chant, black power, and started yelling, black power. and it went

[cheers and applause] and of course, the phenomenal diane nash.cheers and applause] and what they learned and then taught was that if one is to understand that you are born a leader and it is just a matter of when you decide to kick that in, then you know that we will see leadership at every stage of life if people choose to turn that on. and we have seen that here in tennessee over the last couple of weeks. we have seen over 7000 students and young leaders go to the capital to talk about what john lewis and diane nash talked about, the importance of freedom. the importance of liberty. the importance of respecting the right of all people to live where they receive dignity, where they live in a place where they can be free from harm. and so we are here understanding the broad shoulders upon which we all stand. those fighters for freedom and liberty and justice. those fighters who understood the truth must never be stifled or silenced -- [cheers and applause] and so i want to start by recognizing the tennessee three. i forget the first time alesia briscoe and the reverend john lewis resco was a cuban refugee. robert ruth robinson was a graduate from stanford, and john lewis was an episcopalian reverend. the two young people had actually worked in the united farmers workers movement with cesar chavez and with dolores huerta. and when working chavez and where they were thinking about, you know, food issues for farmers. but this got risks and robinson thinking about urban chicanos in in los angeles and the help that they might need which is one reason they collaborate with john lewis and thought of la raza as a paper that could be a movement organ we have to remember they're also los angeles they are reading freep and as wonderful the freep was in terms of trying to be a counter public sphere to the mainstream media, which we saw beautifully that it was like when we studied the way they covered what's not enough of mainstream publications or even the alternative publications were covering the chicano movement. right. i notice from many of your post many of you had never even heard of the chic

but what i know of the late john lewis the phenomenal civil rights icon is that he touched the hearts of so many people, and he actually during that protest in the well of the capital knelt in order to compel action on gun safety. there is no difference between what congressman john lewis did and what representatives justin joan jones and justin pearson are doing. they are speaking for young people, a generation who are tired of having their lives under assault, whether it be by gun violence, police brutality discrimination, they are fed up and they want action. and it's not about the decorum of the house. it's about the survival of the very people that they represent that they give voice to, so the congressional black caucus stands with them. we are working along legislators all across the country. we are calling on the local officials to reappoint representative jones and representative pearson without haste, there should be no delay. if you don't appoint them, you're actually disenfranchising over 70,000 voters in each of their districts. that is wrong. it's undemocratic and we won

are you about these young men stirring up what john lewis would have called good trouble. well i am not just very excited about what is being seen because i think there's a movement that has been coming afloat for a long time. uh maybe starting 10 12 years ago with black lives matter, uh and then maybe sort of culminating after the tragic death of george floyd. but you also had students in parkland high school students. at douglas stone in high school who approached testing and got some legislation passed in the house. you also had the women's movement. all of these movements are still emerging and young. even younger people are getting engaged. not just, uh, students at the high school level and not just students at the collegiate level , but it is very exciting. on the one hand, however, it's very tragic that we still get this kind of resistance because all people are trying to do is to make our nation better for all of regards children and i think we need to open our minds and look at it a little differently than the way we are now. and the way we're looking at it now i

, which crushed john lewis, by the way, for a long time, stokely all of a sudden became much more public, much more militant, and sort of a lightning rod in a way that the leaders of snic had never been before. >> what did john lewis do after losing that vote? did he form a new organization? what was the relationship? >> so john lewis, you know, he had grown up as a sharecropper in alabama, very poor, had gotten involved with activism through the sit in movement in nashville, tennessee and the lunch counter where they would go and desegregate lunch counters. he was a freedom rider. he had been savagely beaten several times during the freedom rides. then he became the head of snic just before the march on washington and we all know that, in 1965, trying to cross the edmund pettus bridge in selma, alabama, he was almost beaten to death. that turned him into a national figure. he was being invited to the white house, was invited into the pantheon of black leaders, and all of a sudden, he arrives at this retreat in a place outside nashville in the spring of 1966 expecting to be elected to th
