he represented rosa parks, martin luther king, john lewis, among many other civil rights luminaries. his success in the courtroom on civil rights is what makes up much of today's textbook for law students. i could go on. let's hear from mr. gray. are you with us? >> thank you very much. >> terrific. we're happy to have you today. how are you doing? >> i'm doing fine, and i want to thank the foundation and those of you who are responsible for having this program. i sat and listened some of the incidents from slavery time forward and just happy to be a part of your program here today. thanks for the invitation. >> absolutely. we're honored. we talked a few days ago. i've had the honor to read your biography and seen some of your other interviews. i have my own questions. we will get to the audience questions along the way as well. i wanted to start with a quote that i pulled out of your biography that struck me. you opened up with one of your chapters with the words segregation was the order of the day. when i was admitted to practice law in alabama, in september of 1954, we were segre

there's the freedom to vote act, and the john lewis bill. those two bills, which would be very, very important. another thing we would try to do is continue to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. we've done some of that. we have more to go. there were things that we couldn't get done because we couldn't do it through reconciliation. more stuff, look, our i.r.a. bill on the environment was a huge success. we said there would be $369 billion in tax breaks for solar, wind, hydro, nuclear. there's over a trillion dollars that's been invested. these are businesses investing this money. even conservative business organizations like these. we need to do more, because like at what we've seen in terms of climate change across the whole country. look in any part of the country, my part, the northeast, but the west, the south, the midwest, floods, everything. so we got to do more on climate change. that's another. there's a large agenda of things that we have to do, and i'll tell you, one of the first things we do is get rid of that horrible supreme

and there so this is fairly important to us in terms of the john lewis voter voting rights act yesterday the anniversary yesterday the anniversary motivator this is so important to america. when we passed the bill on when john was still with us and we were in the minority, we wrote the bill in the leader's office would be mine with the congressional black caucus and others who were there to pass a voting rights bill. i see you were there at that time, and any event, the bill passed in the house with like 400 votes. no opposition in the senate was so bipartisan, we walked down the steps that i as the leader of the house democrats. leader of the republicans, the senate. together george signed the bill more only about three years later, the senate decided that our criteria were obsolete and they were going to rewrite and they took it apart. they took it apart. it's a rogue supreme court. i'm telling you. this is a whole other subject that supreme court is going to ballot to, because if we don't have a democratic president is more hard to come with. but no, every category so so not to a fear

they are a major part of our politics. 1984 has been lost in the shuffle a little bit, john lewis -- he was here in a wheelchair. seeing what a pioneer he was when he ran in earnest -- and hillary clinton. she did a speech that was impressive. and certainly, everyone will be talking about biden's speech, coming on late, talking for 50 minutes, emotional about his entire life, about being american. it will be an emotional introduction. there are a lot of highlights already. one thing that the democrats have done well in chicago is they have packed in a lot. >> a lot of people have been comparing this year was 1968, a year when there was political unrest over foreign wars, political violence, and johnson not seeking reelection. the democratic convention in chicago -- as a historian, what you make of those comparisons? >> it is not apropos other than the element of protest over israel/gaza. but in 1968, there was a traumatized democratic party. the party itself was deeply divided between the anti-vietnam war behind eugene mccarthy and the johnson administration, represented by the sitti

i support the voting rights act, legislation that john lewis -- the john lewis legislation.t. i support the right to organize a union. i think when it comes down to our report -- i was fighting against china and holding them accountable, he was making a lot of money as a hedge fund executive. that is important. >> when hillary clinton lost pennsylvania in 2016, she didn't get the suburban women's vote, the counties around philadelphia. and the black turnout was not as high as it needed to be to overcome the trump support in the west. >> in suburban communities, in philadelphia and other parts of the state, that vote has been growing over time. secretary clinton got a strong vote. president biden got a stronger vote. it's possible that kamala harris will get a higher margin. we have to make sure as we speak to suburban and urban voters on the issues of rights and costs and the economic argument that we are still -- as kamala and tim have started, we are going to the rural communities, like beaver county. >> where tim walz might help you? >> no question. >> it's great to have

harris just released there photo of her literally looking up to john lewis' mural. there's a different history for black women who also played a role in civil rights in activism. like ella baker. >> i have had 40 or 50 years of struggle. i had to learn, i had to learn that hitting back with my fist, one individual was not enough. it takes organization, it takes dedication, it takes the willingness to stand by and do what has to be done. >> reporter: takes all that and more. and if it takes organization, those women who as i'm reminding you were in the struggle were not necessarily all given the organization or backing to then go directly into politics or business or other extended activities in american life. those women face more hurdles then men in politics. in total, black women may have made up 55 congresswomen and 93 mayors in america. and while voters do know harris' candidacy is original, there have been very few times when americans have had the opportunity to vote for a black woman in any top statewide offices whatsoever. the big positions in the state's of

know, i was in court in new york trying to get on the ballot while she was, you know, talking, the john lewis voting rights act, we're going to pass it, everybody has a vote, yeah, except their opponents, i think that's obviously a big political story, you support trump. that's a big change in your life, you were a democrat, you're still a democrat, but i also think, like, you said at the beginning, i'm an independent, i registered as an independent when i was running, when i talked to president trump, we talked about, you know, we were going to form a unity government with independents, that's not really a typical endorsement, that's... like abraham lincoln's team of rivals, where we might continue to disagree publicly on some things, but where we do agree, we're going to seek to get into government together to make sure that those issues are priorities for our country, and you know, i liked his attitude, and maybe we can continue, there are some... and so, i believe in that, yeah, you see how this realignment has happened where the elites on wall street, the big tech companies, the pharmace

i think even on occasion, young john lewis and all of that.nd he would tell me some interesting stories. one that i remember in particular is what he said when he had a meeting with president kennedy, he and a w them had a meeting. and they informed president kennedy about the injustices of black people, and that they planned to bring a whole lot of people here to protest that. and he said that, president kennedy said, well, i don't think that's a good idea. we want to help you, but i don't think that's a good idea. because if there's an incident, dr. king, it will set your movement back. and dr. king said, there wt be an incident. e alknow he brought 250,000eople here that day. ben and i were there. it was an absolutely glorious, inspiring day. came away knowing that change is going to come. and it did. we passed the civil rights bill in 1964. so -- about five years later. five years later. this is what happened. peter: also joining us is bernard demczuk, the author of this book, breaking barriers with chili. you are the official and unoffici

there is a george floyd justice policing act yet to be passed, a john lewis voting rights act to both restore section five but also expand access to voting, so there is still a lot of work to be done, but i think the reason why people focus on the 60th anniversary is because it was such a watershed moment. and i would add today is the 100th birthday of james baldwin, the writer and thinker and activist who did so much to also hope that civil rights act be passed. and lyndon johnson or john f. kennedy talk about him. he met with robert of kennedy, the attorney general, in may of 1963 and had a seminar discussion about civil rights, and his best-selling book in 1963, published as the longest essay, published in november of 1962, is one of the game changing documents for the second reconstruction, right there on letter from birmingham jail. he really transformed how we think about race and slavery and the american democracy and citizenship, and the very idea of the war on political groups in the united states forever. so baldwin is someone very key when you talk about the 1964 civil righ
