joining me today on this edition of "studio 1.0," greylock partners david sze and john lilly. david, you have been at the firm for 15 years? >> 16. emily: john, you put greylock on the map in silicon valley. how did you do that? john: it was a partnership effort. we both take some credit, but it is a team effort. in the early 2000's, we made a move to say every partner should have an operating background. that allows us to connect better to entrepreneurs, to build companies. emily: john, you were the ceo of mozilla. you started your career as a scientist at apple? john: that mostly means i didn't ship code at apple. i was doing experiments around the edges. emily: why greylock? john: i wouldn't want to work at most firms. emily: why not? guest: i like people who make things. everyone at greylock valued making products. it is characteristic of david to enter the question like, no, it was everybody else. emily: you did find facebook and linkedin. you convinced reid hoffman to join the firm. how did you do that? how do you do that? john: again, it comes down to -- we believe if yo

chairman and ceo of eli lilly. john, good to see you. i look at your pipeline. trying to figu your stock has not performed as well. you had the patent expiration stuff. we talked about that for the last how many years? when did that start? three or four years ago? >> we started to talk about it in 2009. the bulk of the tsunami hit us '11 to '14. >> you managed through that. then you got just the -- the political environment, the rhetoric coming from maybe hillary clinton and others on the left about it. is that why the stock has had trouble? then there are adversion advers other things. >> lily had a good runup in recent shares. great share performance in 2015. things have come down a little bit. you know, joe, when -- there are always cycles in our industry. not just for big pharma but biotech as well. i look at the fundamentals. i don't think the fundamentals of the business have ever been stronger. we're finally able to take the science and turn it into ide products. two-thirds of the medicine that you take in your lifetime you take after the age of 65. people
