it is a precis, i would argue, of john locke's second treatise of government. so all contain in this one sentence, sum up the core fundamental principles of locke's second treatise of government. all right. so let's now begin to unpack the mean i meani meaning of this complex sentence. it begins we hold these truths to be self-evident. this is the most important clause of the most important sentence of the most important document in american history, but it's one that's often passed over. in part, it's passed over i think just because it's so simple and so elegant in its formulation that we just are, are kind of eye reads over it and we want to get to the truths themselves. but i think, i think this first clause is critically important. we hold these truths to be self-evident. most scholars of the declaration of independence tend to focus on this notion of self-evident. we hold these truths to be self-evidence. well, what could that possibly mean? to say the truths that are to follow are self-evident? well, this idea of self-evident densy is a technical, philos

and the three great philosophers of the enlightenment worse or isaac newton, john locks essay concerning human understanding and locks second treaty of government. what i'm going to argue is that the ideas, the fundamental core ideas and locks essay or innocence summed up and embodied in the first paragraph of the declaration. the second paragraph of the declaration is a abstracts, an abstract of the core basic principles that you will find in the second treaties of government. so let me just sum up for you quickly the core ideas, the core principles of the indictment which i think can be seen as having been transposed onto the declaration of independence. there is an enlightenment project, we can identify a kind of comprehensive philosophy of this period known as the enlightenment, the 17th and 18th century enlightenment. and like all comprehensive systematic philosophies it has four basic branches. it includes four basic branches of philosophy. first is metaphysics. what is metaphysics? it is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of reality. and i can sum up for you in one

i drew on the sources of the writings of john lock. i drew on mr. thomas pains pamphlet, common sense. all of this together provided the foundation act. nonetheless, the virginia declaration of rights written by my friend george mason, he wrote it at the same time that i was writing our declaration of american independence. further question if you will. >> how long did he take you to drafty document? >> that's a very good question. if i can recall, it took me sometime. you ask me how long it took me to read the declaration. well, i believe it took me three days. three days to write that declaration. in fact, i have here one of the first drafts, there were several drafts. three days to write the declaration on four sheets of paper. many of you may wonder, mr. jefferson, that is quite a long time to simply write a declaration of independence. as you just said, everything was there for you to utilize. you are not designed to put forth anything new or original. but citizens i will tell you, i'm guilty of something that you all are guilty of. not one of
