i heard enough of the back and forth that i'm tempted to defer all the questions of senator john mccainall we should just point out to set the record straight that we did not plan to have that back and forth. we were interviewing senator mccain who lobbed something against jay carney, and he responded, and back and forth, that is how it began. really you see people of that level, a sitting senator and key white house aide or former key white house aide duking it out on television. >> right, now everybody is so savvy about who they want to be on tv with, they're sort of like, okay, i want to be alone and don't want to be with this person or that person. and with this whole confluence of events, they engaged substantively, they engaged -- i spoke to somebody who knew john mccain who said while the mccain folks didn't intend for this to happen they were pretty happy from their point of view that it did happen. i think each of them had a point of view, particularly about whether if the u.s. forces had stayed whether we would be in this situation with isis or whether we could have done more

i think john mccain's point is exactly right. had we had a presence there, we would have had leverage on maliki to avoid the purging of the sunnis that occurred, particularly in the military. second, we would have had trainers to ensure that the iraqi forces were up to the task. not to be able to monitor what's going on in that part of the world after we lost so many of our best and brightest in in that conflict, i have a military legislative assistant who was a captain in the marine corps in iraq. you can imagine how he feels about this. he lost members of his unit there, as did many ohioans gave their lives there in fall luge gentleman, anbar province. when the black flag was waved over those cities several months ago, we didn't do anything. the vacuum was created. once it was created, we should have acted sooner. now the president is finally coming forward and saying i see the problem, let's do something about it. i'm willing to be one of those who says, yes, we do need to do something about it, we do need to react and i do be

john mccain is john mccain and he'll say what he's going to say. but i think petraeus' words will have significant influence on others. mccain will be a yes vote. how grumpily but he'll be a yes vote. and i think they'll swing some republicans and maybe some democrats, to give the president authority to do this. i think petraeus' words were important in that respect. it's good and refreshing to hear someone who is knowledgeable and credible on these subjects say, maybe isis isn't as fearsome as everyone is saying. it's interesting to have that perspective. >> that's why a lot of liberal democrats, left on the outside once again in what seems like a march toward more conflict or something like war, to sort of be a lonely voice and say, wait a minute, are we heading back toward a pre-iraq moment? i want to show you what rear admiral kirby, pentagon spokesman, said just today. listen to the language used about isis. take a listen. >> this is not the iraq war of 2002. but make no mistake, we know, we are at war with isil, the same way we're at war and

actually engaged, substantively, they, disagreed, i spoke with, with, somebody who is close to john mccaind that, you know, while the, you know, mccain folks didn't intend for this to happen they were pretty happy with the way it went. from, from their point of view. and i think we should see more of this on television. because, you know i think each of them had a point of view, particularly abut whether if the u.s., u.s. forces had stayed, whether we would be in this situation with isis or whether we could have done -- more to keep a residual force there. these are the arguments being played out in congress right now. >> peter, they see this completely different. john mccain makes the argument, if the iraqis wanted it, president wanted it. could have worked something out on the forces thing. jay carney said the president would have been fine. iraqis said no. others say if the u.s. had residual force there and iraqi military fell apart even if there was a u.s. military force, some say that wouldn't have happened. then the u.s. would have been in position of having to try to rescue perhaps,
