i want to bring in now presidential story and john meacham, author of the new book and there was biteo mr. meacham, good to see you. >> how are you sir? >> i am doing very well that you're asking. earlier in the show i interviewed the filmmakers for the new documentary of roger stone. christopher goldman's and said this, watch. >> what i learned from this, from being with roger stone for nearly three years and the people around him, was and is that january six was not the combination, it was rather the beginning of a movement that is increasingly undemocratic. it is important in challenging the institutions that protect the united states. >> talk about where we are john as a moment in history right now that might be coming in the days ahead and what might be coming in the days at auction. >> i think, and it's not a partisan point, i think that the evidence of our eyes is that of the last several years, there is a fundamentally violent, undemocratic lower case d trend in the country that is not theoretical but israel. and if you doubt that, there is the images of january six, the image

john, i'm going to -- i'm going to go from john meacham to john avlon -- it's an easy transition. --publicly appear with candidates and congressional and gubernatorial races in we also campaign with candidates for some secretary of state races in key battleground states. it's not just saying that democracy at risk here. he's gonna put some skin in the game. >> yeah, and it's significant that he is campaigning for the secretary of state. that is not the kind of thing that the office typically, an ex president, would focus on. what i think it highlights just how important those all forces are, especially when you have people running who are election deniers, really, with the promise of trying to overturn the av election. but i think obama uniquely energizes the democratic base and unifies it. in some ways, even beyond president biden. and so i think he will inject some energy. >> what did you think when you heard the former first lady, nina, remind people of the importance of the peaceful transfer of power? we also what happened on january 6th. where her remarks a rebuke or a warning o

for example, historian john meacham was cancelled from speaking at alabama's sanford college.biden from speaking at notre dame on the basis of his political beliefs. that's not all. a 2018 gallup poll found that 61% of college students say the climate on campus prevents some people from expressing their views because others might find them offensive. on the other side is the banning of books. the target is disproportionately books -- according to pen america, what they call gag orders, proposed state restrictions on classroom teachers about race, gender and sexuality have increased by 250% over the last year. there's also been at least one case where a liberal librarian engaged in book burning. it's a test of the old classically liberal idea. i disagree with what you say but i will defend to the death your right to say it. that's the real right we need to assert. one of the best recent defenses came from general mark milley when he was peppered by questions about critical krace th theory. >> i've read karl marx, lenin and i personally find it offensive that we're accusing offi

so as the story john meacham put it this is diplomatically oblique. it's a little different from just the terminated conflict message from john c calhoun in the war department. and so what we're gets continues to get interesting is jackson's response. jackson will write on january 6th of 1818 two monroe. this is the most pertinent section of the letter. essentially saying he kind of had his own ideas for this mission and said this can be done without implicating the government let it be signified to me through any channel say jay ray and he's mentioning this john ray who was a congressman from tennessee. you see at the bottom of the screen that the possession of the florida's would be desirable to the united states and in 60 days. it will be accomplished. so here we have yet another angle of meaning here. jackson kind of saying here. here's my offer. just say the word and some of you may notice that in jackson's letter here in some writing going the opposite direction from the original letter is a note which reads mr. j. ray's letter in answer is burnt
