to hear john miller also reveal their through this information that these shots were fired through the tree line, that there was a return fire coming from the secret service of course, we don't know or unless john, you've learned this to what kind of distance we're talking about do you have you heard anything about the distance involved here? okay. no. >> alright. so charles ramsay, i mean, give me your reaction here to this kind of detail that we're hearing. >> again, preliminary startled well, first of all, john has incredible sources and he just does it time and time again. he's able to get information very quickly. and if those sources are correct, i have no reason to believe that that, they're not if it's coming from john, he double checks things. this changes everything it changes everything. and the way in which they go about investigating this. now is going to be different. and again, like steve said, if there was an exchange of gunfire where they so you can service agents or some law enforcement actually fired at a suspect again, this is rapidly unfolding. information does cha

standby, andrew as well because we do have seen its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller here with us, john, what are you learning about this indictment of the former new york city of the current harrak city mayor. i should note well, kaitlan as stated a moment ago, this is something that is not unexpected. this federal investigation has been going on for many months. it started when the mayor was in washington visiting the white house and learned that the home of his campaign treasurer had been raided by the fbi and since then, we've seen a flurry in separate kind of flurries of subpoenas, demanding records and what they've been looking into is allegations that the mayor excepted either upgrades to first-class on turkish airlines we have heard that they are investigating reports that he got free trips from the airline to multiple cities around the world cities other than turkey. and that the theory of the case was that turkish businessmen allegedly bundled campaign contributions by having their employees make it within the legal limits, and then allegedly paying them bac

but john miller, you've been doing some reporting. what can you tell us? >> well, we've been working with the name for some time to develop background on this individual the individual who's in custody is ryan wesley, ralph he born in 1966. he is 58-years-old. he has been living in hawaii. he is construction worker in north carolina. when you look at his background on the criminal side, he has what appears to be eight arrests mostly for minor offenses but in his social media, he goes deep into his his self-proclaimed involvement in the conflict in ukraine. his efforts to recruit soldiers and bring them into the country his claims that he has been there possibly as a fighter so they are looking and digging deeper into his background. and of course, one of the things they are looking at is what is the motive? and what was the purpose of not only this alleged attempt to assassinate former president trump, but also to record it on a gopro camera if not stream is for what purpose is it propaganda? does it have to do with one of these issues or conflicts he's be

. >> now, cnn, chief law enforcement intelligence analyst john miller, also retired fbi supervisory special agent david bruner. >> john, let me just start with you in the news that ryan just reported, there a few minutes ago that this shooter was known to authorities. what more can you tell us about that? what exactly does that mean, though that's developing now but what it suggests is that the fbi received a tip or information about this individual that usually would come into either the field. office or sometimes the national threat assessment center and then those are usually sent out to local law enforcement as a lead, saying we have this information to follow up on it we'll have to sort through what was the order of where did it go? who was it shared with? and then what happened with it. >> and you're on the phone just moments ago while i was even on the air. were you getting new information about the weapon used? >> so we are told that it is a ar 15, a long rifle that is one of those things that if that's the case, how did it get into the school? but as we saw in the attempted assassi

this at the table, but first let's go to cnn's chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller, who's been a part of new york city for quite a long time. i mean, john, first of all, what do we know? oh, about all the various things that mayor adams could be facing here, which adds to a level of complexity, given that we don't yet know what the charges are well, abby, first in full disclosure, i worked for mayor adams as a deputy police commissioner in the beginning of his administration. so he and his team are people that i'm highly familiar with what we're looking at here is and it's a great way to frame it because it's complicated and we should understand it. this is an investigation started by the fbi more than a year ago. last november they did search warrants against several of atoms, key aides, and associates, and businessmen connected allegedly to this case that is what put us on notice that the fbi was investigating it after that they seize the mayor's phones and electronic devices and we have seen them subpoena additional records with search warrants, looking into camp

i know our john miller, we'll we'll share certainly more on that. but we know that he lived in hawaii. this is the man who was detained today. he lived in hawaii his 58-years-old, and the car that he was picked up in was registered to his daughter. we also know from law enforcement that he was very calm when he was detained and he didn't show much emotion, but let me just set the scene here in terms of the law enforcement a picture. i live here in palm beach county and i'm used to law enforcement when donald trump is in town, roads are closed. there's a police presence. i've never seen anything like this following this incident today here at trump international golf club. we are here on summit boulevard. that's the main road that runs right in front of the golf clubs entrance and when we talk about holds five and six, which is where this incident, apparently happened as he was turning the corner between 5, 5-6, that area that is right at the corner, those holes are ready. the corner of summit boulevard behind me and congress. so just down the way he

i want to go now to cnn's kristen holmes, who is also in florida, as well as cnn's john miller john miller, i want to start with you and just to pick up on where paula left off on the charges against ryan ralph and the notion that perhaps it will be hard to charge him with an apparent or with an assassination attempt explain that. and because just to me who doesn't know all the details of federal law or the law that's sort of applicable here. it seems like if it's a former president and candidate for president and this guy is on the golf course trying to aim at him. what else is it? >> so we've got two things going here. one, we just learned from paula, which is we've got holding charges, is what the feds would kind of describe these as. and there are good charges if you're a prosecutor the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. that's a charge where people often can get sentenced to five years in prison and you can go up from there. the possession of a firearm within obliterated serial number and that's key because if you're the person providing a gun to a convicted felon not only

is cnn national correspondent kristen holmes, cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller, and former secret service agent, jason russell, kristen to bring you when there's some new reporting that trump is supposed to be meeting with the acting director of the secret service today. what more do we know about this meeting? >> well, we're still trying to learn details as to whether or not that meeting has wrapped. we originally told it was happening early this afternoon, but there are still a lot of questions that the campaign in has for the acting director during this sit-down. now whether or not those senior advisers are also going to be present or if it's just going to be the acting director and donald trump, we don't have it it clear read on that, but there are a lot of questions as to how exactly this could happen. again, another part of this, how exactly something like this could happen when donald trump's schedule was not public how is it possible that someone was able to lay in wait for 11, 12 hours on a property which donald trump was going to attend one of his prop

but there are different probes, so it's a lot going on. >> john miller. thanks so much. appreciate it and speaking of a lot going on, it's a very busy afternoon here at the lead, we have another breaking news story for you right now, involved involving the hunter biden case out in california. let's go straight to cnn's evan perez in los angeles. evan, we talked to in the last hour and a hunter biden, despite what we believed he was going thank you. do actually offered to plead guilty. any news on that yesterday? >> the judge it has now accepted hunter's formal plea for plead guilty on all nine counts that he was facing. now, we spent the last couple of hours with prosecutors spending basically running through all 56 pages of this indictment that goes through a lot of the behavior that are possible computer said he was doing during the time he was addicted to crack cocaine earning millions of dollars, about $7 million during this time, but not paying his taxes if instead, what prosecutors said and they read all of these details out in court. they said he was spending his

drop last year let's talk about this with cnn's chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller john walk us through these numbers well, what we're seeing is a couple of numbers of significance. >> so first, going to the overall numbers and we can look at that graphic you've got violent crime overall. that's shootings, manslaughter, murder down three 3%. so that's a good story on a day when we're hearing bad news out of places like birmingham, property crime, overall, down two 2.4% so that is from 2022 to 2023. those are the numbers we're looking at based on the fbi's correlating them if you zoom back though and you get the larger story, which is what's the five-year trend, will take a look at our other graphic, which is, you see that over the time, say from the five-year analysis, murder is actually up almost 10%. aggravated assault up almost 7%, 6.5% so you see that we are not where we were before pre-pandemic, pre criminal justice forum laws in many states prix the defund, the police movement all of which have different effects on police agencies across the country the crime

service performed in this instance with me now, cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller. john nice to see you this morning. good morning. >> one of the things that was raised yesterday by one of the sheriffs involved and just this notion out there that they are still investigating the idea that this could have been some kind of a conspiracy that someone else may have been involved as natural to investigate that. where do things stand right now? >> so that was wills neither the martin county sheriff, very sharp law man. and it's an important question if you look at the history of assassins, you know, there's always a conspiracy theory. there is usually not a conspiracy with hidden, powerful hands and foreign countries, but we also have to look at recent history and put puzzle pieces together. there is the iranian threat against donald trump in individual was arrested a couple of weeks ago in the united states for trying to recruit ahead team you also have to look at the individual who stabbed salman rushdie, who was the subject of an order by the iranian ayatollah years a

national security analysts, juliet chi, m and cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analysts, john miller. thank you both for being with us, john. first you what more can you tell us about what happened? >> well, what we know is about 2,800 and that number could go up of these people who are injured were standing around people or wearing these pagers. now, these were targeted at members of hezbollah who uses a pager. this is something that hezbollah started doing because because they believe that their phones had been compromised in terms of intercepts by israeli intelligence. so this was a way to communicate. they thought securely these pager started exploding and before we go to the video, just warn people this is a little graphic and maybe disturbing but these were people on street corners. they were people in stores. here's a man in a supermarket the pager appears to be in his bag or on his belt. it explodes. he goes down and he doesn't get up. the people around him do not appear to be injured pagers all seemed to go off at about the same time. watch the man who is about to pay at thi

a random act of violence i want to bring in cnn, chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john millernd john, it's been days now theoretically i guess this guy could be anywhere where he could be. now, law enforcement authorities down there in kentucky say that they have good reason to believe that he is contained within their perimeter in that wooded area. the challenge there, of course, as you'll remember, this, we saw this when the escapee from the jail in pennsylvania went into the woods and slip their perimeter a couple of times. it is hard to maintain a perimeter over terrain like this, where you can't see into far and even from above with a helicopter, even with sensors, that canopy of trees makes it really difficult to be able to tell what's moving around in there, even with thermal imaging, sometimes you see something that might be your suspect and you find out it's a deer and it's hard to cover ground in there because you're doing it mostly on foot given the terrain, how unusual is this kind of crime? >> so it should be unusual, but it's not really, i mean last week we had t

press conference, joining me here tonight, cnn it's chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller, and cnn contributor jennifer mascia. masia. thank you both for being here. john obviously, a lot of questions about the shooter and how he got the gun into the school, what stood out to you from what you heard from officials? jools they're well, i think we learned a lot particularly about that earlier threat. >> so in may of 2023, there were in barrow county now, but in may of 2023, a ninth grader whose 14 today was an eighth grader who was 13 at the time? and there was a gaming platform that is used by young kids a lot where posts were made about an individual threatening to do a school shooting, that those reports went into the fbi's west virginia based threat operations center. they went through the processes of getting subpoenas, disclosure orders preservation orders. they got those postings, they traced it to an ip address and then a physical address. the fbi pass that information to the jackson county sheriff different county from this, right? they go to the house, they intervi

out randi kaye, thanks so much joining us and cnn, chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller, former secret service agent jonathan wackrow, for fbi, deputy director andrew mccabe, and retired fbi supervisory special agent, daniel brunner john first of all, what do you make of what we learn today and where things stand? i think what we learned today was they're going backwards through all of his things, but there were a couple of interesting points. number one, as randi reported there's that 12 capture of his cell phone. the wording is interesting in the vicinity of the area. it suggests it's two different things. first thing is he used the cover of darkness the night before to get through the bushes to the fence line do his reconnaissance as to what's the best place to set up and then he lay in wait there. the other alternative is that he set up his gopro. they're set it to a streaming setting and then went back across the street where there's many commercial places in parking lots. and just settled into that's an important point. >> i mean, in that area right across the stre

has been covering the story in georgia, former federal prosecutor jeffrey toobin is with us and john miller, our chief law enforcement intelligence analyst also, dave collin, who authored a definitive book. one of the most infamous mass school shootings in u.s. history columbine john russell, what are you what are you learning? >> well, we began to learn and this is based on reporting by ryan young down at the scene and mark morales here in new york, that this gun, an ar 15 platform, was something that the father who was just charged, colin gave to his son as a christian smith's gift in december of 2023. now that has extraordinary significance and a number of levels number one, it is just several months after we learned that the jackson county sheriff went to the house interviewed the father and the son about the fbi reports that he had made an online threat on a discord, right? >> there's sonya allegedly had a discord account in which he made online threats to a school shooting. the local authorities contacted by the fbi, interviewed both the son and the father. that's right. who denied an

just thoughts and prayers i want to bring in cnn, chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller. john, thank you so much for being here as we are learning more information. and tonight, the father now in custody just a day after the shooting, what do we know about how authorities made this decision to charge him? >> well, that question was asked at the news briefing where they announced his arrest and they were very circumspect, but i think you as a former federal prosecutor and myself with my background would surmise it comes from three key places number one, we learned today from the sheriff that the suspect, the 14-year-old boy, began talking when police took him into custody, they advised him of his miranda rights and kept talking and they said he's still talking so you could get from that that questions that they had about where weapons were stored, what his access to those weapons were, what has access to ammunition would be came from him. the second thing is the search warrant at the house they conducted, which would have given them a firsthand look a bet about how weapon
