i want to get right to our chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller. he's getting some new reporting for us. john, what are you learning? >> well, wolf, what we've been trying to do is develop a richer picture of who is the man behind this carnage in new orleans. what do we know about him, and what can that tell us about motive and what we've learned from multiple sources is that mr. jabbar apparently made, according to authorities, a series of voice recordings on video as he drove. they believe, from texas to louisiana to partake in these attacks. allegedly, the recordings talk about the turmoil in his family, the long fought, bitter divorce he was going through. he discusses, according to officials briefed on the videos, where it appears they're made while he's driving. but it's in the dark, so you can't really see him on these videos recorded apparently on his phone. but he talks about the idea of getting his family together for a celebration, which would have been a ruse so that he could kill all of them, but that over time, after having a series of

joining us now to discuss cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller and jameel jaffere former counsel to the assistant attorney general for national security. john, let me start with you. some are blaming local officials for failing to secure bourbon street. the incoming new orleans city council president said they need more federal resources. and he told cnn he was frustrated with the fbi. take a listen. >> very troubling to many of us that during the fbi briefing yesterday, it was made public that this individual posted on social media, on places like facebook, well before the attack, that he intended to do something and that this was not flagged. >> clearly, there's a lot of blame flying. what's your take away on the security failure? >> my takeaway is that the city council president isn't paying attention. he's talking about the briefing where chris reyes, the deputy assistant director of the fbi, talked about five audio and video posts to facebook that occurred between 1:29 a.m. and 3:02 a.m. when the attack was at 3:15 a.m. i'm not sure who he believes from the f

cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller is with us. cnn law enforcement analyst and former secret service agent jonathan wackrow is with us. we're going to dig into a lot of different things right now, john. first, just what's the latest on the las vegas investigation? >> well, the las vegas investigation is taking an interesting turn as they get deeper into the profile of the individual who rented the vehicle. now, let's go full stop here for a second. they believe they know who rented the vehicle, but they are not 100% certain that that is the person who is in the vehicle. because that body, because it's badly burned, has not been identified. but the renter, like the new orleans suspect, is military background, but not former military. he's active duty military with 19 years plus of service, and he's part of special forces command. he is highly trained in communications, electronic measures for bomb detection, intelligence operations. he would be one of the most sophisticated in terms of training people in the green beret. >> okay, ju

officials are telling our john miller that the attacker who drove a car through that crowd in the early hours of new year's day, murdering 14 people and injuring dozens more, used a rare organic compound not previously seen before in the united states, and officials are trying to determine exactly how the attacker may have obtained it. these are crucial new details. we have more on this coming up here in just a moment, and it comes as we are having more information coming in on the man who blew himself up in a cybertruck outside the trump hotel in las vegas. officials just releasing video of matthew livelsberger stopping at a charging station in route to las vegas. you can see him there walking towards the vehicle appears to get inside of it. now, officials say that his act in front of the trump hotel was a suicide. they say livelsberger was suffering from ptsd and had trouble in his personal life. we know livelsberger was active duty. he served in the special forces. he'd served in afghanistan. he was a highly decorated military member. similarly, the new year's eve attacker in new orl

you know, john miller, i want to start with you. this kind of attack is obviously something we've been talking about for a very long time in this country. someone who has been radicalized somehow and has decided himself to carry out an attack. at this point, given all that we know about this attack, is there anything that we can glean from this except that potential attackers could be anywhere pretty much at any time at this point, because they can self-radicalize. >> and i think we've seen that, you know, we have cases of self-radicalization with teenagers in las vegas, with people in oklahoma. when you look at the people who are emerging in response to the resurgence, and this is important, the resurgence in i.s.i.s. propaganda, which is gathering fuel from the situation in gaza and the propaganda value that they can exploit from that terrible tragedy of death and destruction. there. you're seeing people who are lost, spinning, failing. and what are they promised in the propaganda? if you step up to this, you'll have valor. you'll

also with me, cnn's chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, john miller. john, i want to start with you where evan left off. you know, the idea that investigators have reviewed this video showing three men and a woman who may have been involved in placing suspected improvised explosive devices in new orleans. is there still a public risk here? i think everybody's trying to get a sense. this sounds bad, and it sounds like something people should be very uneasy about. what does that tell you? >> well, i think in new orleans, if you go by past experiences, your guide, once they have done, once they have carried out effectively a surprise attack. >> that is when security increases. it's when risk goes down. the question is, is there another surprise attack at another time at another place? obviously the the things you're seeing around the sugar bowl and other things where where security is being increased just makes that harder. but if you look at the events in las vegas and try to decipher. all right, we need to know what that means. if you look at some of the

joining us now is cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller. , joby warrick, national security reporter for the washington post and author of the pulitzer prize winning book black flags the rise of i.s.i.s. john, first of all, in terms of the las vegas, what do you make of the writings that were released today? not intended as a terror attack, he said, but rather, in his words, a wake up call. >> i mean, it is what we've been talking about really over the last 24 hours, which is this was an individual who was going through problems at home, family problems, who was going through depression related to his work as a special operator in some of the most dangerous places and situations. ptsd. but there's also a piece of paranoia in there. he communicates with another friend where he says, i believe i'm being followed by the fbi and dhs, and i may not be able to cross over to the mexican border. he thought he was under surveillance. he was talking about revealing things about u.s. and chinese drone programs, about civilian casualties that he was invo

so law enforcement officials are telling our john miller that it was a rare organic compound not previously seen in the united states that was used in the explosive devices that were found in the french quarter area at the after the attack that began at the intersection just behind me. and it comes as investigators are also learning more about the actions taken leading up to the time of the attack tonight, investigators saying they've determined that 42 year old shamsud-din jabbar set fire to the airbnb in new orleans, where he was staying ahead of the attack. authorities say he set a small fire in the hallway and strategically placed accelerants around the house as part of his effort to destroy evidence. all of this, as federal authorities are now warning law enforcement across the country to be on the lookout for potential copycat attacks. so you're the council member that represents the french quarter. how would you assess the ability to prevent something like this before new year's day in this area? >> well, seeing how it hadn't happened before, i would assume that for us to figure that

cnn's john miller joins us from new york. natasha, to you first, the sheriff said investigators demonstrated that the investigators worked through the night, came up with a ton of evidence. what more can you tell us? >> yeah. at the press conference, phil, they showed pictures of these charred pieces of evidence. there are two semiautomatic handguns that they found that they said were legally purchased. just very shortly before this explosion happened on new year's day, they found the person's military i.d., a passport, a fireworks and iphone smartwatch credit cards, saying that most of the material in there was to help fuel a greater explosion, but again, that it was contained more, did less damage than it could have done because authorities credit the the construction of the cybertruck itself. and i did talk to a couple of guests, though, who felt the shaking from that explosion all the way up above 40 floors up in the hotel. they said there was even smoke billowing into the stairwell out of the elevator doors. here is one

so that's one very interesting note that our john miller is reporting. we've also learned that the attacker jabbar set fire to his airbnb prior to the attack. now, you may remember, uh, cnn got exclusive access to the door camera images of jabbar as he was unloading his truck outside that airbnb late in the night prior to the attack. we saw him going back and forth from that truck there. you see the the the the ring camera images. we now know that he set fire to a set, a deliberate fire in the airbnb prior to the attack and and place accelerants around the the the the inside the apartment. um to try to destroy evidence. according to law enforcement, the fire kind of burned itself out and the fire department was called, i think around 530 or 5 a.m. or so in the morning, which was after the attack. we're also learning from law enforcement that a transmitter was found in the truck, and that transmitter was intended to be used in order to ignite the and set off those explosive devices. >> anderson, i know you also had a chance to speak to the brothers of one

joining us now, we have cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller. john, you have been talking to sources specifically about this vegas suspect. what are you learning? >> well, we're learning he also, as we mentioned, has a military background. it appears he's active duty. and it appears he's a special forces communications officer. so the question is that is who authorities believe rented this truck from its owner through the turo app, which is an app that rents people's private vehicles to other people. as the facilitator, they are going on the investigative assumption that he's also the person who is in that vehicle when it exploded. but they won't have that for certain until they get an i.d., a positive i.d., dna, dental records, something on the body that was went up in flames in that vehicle. so what they're looking now is going back through that person's history. who is that person? where was he supposed to be in the military? was he on leave and then what is his background, associates and communications with other people now? in the new orlea

. >> john miller also reported a couple of days ago about this unique compound that was apparently usede -- in the ieds, which is not something that's been used or seen in the u.s. before. >> yeah, i think, for me, anderson, all these small details that seem ano, ma'am mouse with his background and experience all start to point in the direction of assistance or aid. now, there's no proof of this yet, we don't have any solid evidence that he was actually working with people in isis or some other terrorist group, but his foreign travel certainly opens up the possibility that the purpose of that travel was to meet with terrorists or supporters of terrorist causes, who could help him plan this attack. and now, when you have details like the explosive compound, again, these are -- these are sophisticated steps for a guy who probably had very little explosives, if any, explosives experience before this attack. and if he was actually planning with isis members or isis supporters overseas, that's a very concerning development, but it also presents an elegant and effective lead for investigators

i want to bring in our national security and law enforcement experts and john miller. i'll start with you. cnn has learned that federal authorities warned only last month of these kinds of threats from lone offenders and the potential use of vehicle ramming. did new orleans officials overlook a potential threat here? >> i think new orleans officials have, as we've gotten further away from nine over 11, taken bourbon street, which is an ideal target for a ramming attack and not secured it to the point that they could have. there's a bunch of reasons for that. it involves a number of different agencies, but having a police car blocking it would have stopped anybody who was going to make a turn where the officer could say, no, it was not going to stop a determined assailant who could go around that car and floor it. he's not going to worry about getting a ticket for ignoring the cop. if his intent is to kill as many people as possible. >> danielle harvin is with us. danielle. the fbi says they believe the attacker was, quote, 100% inspired by i.s.i.s.. do you think i.s.i.

. >> well, joining me now, john miller, cnn chief, law enforcement and intelligence analyst, jameel jaffer, founder and executive director of the national security institute at george mason law school. and pete lap, retired fbi special agent. we begin with you. john, investigators are looking into all of this. of course, they say jabbar was inspired by i.s.i.s., that he pledged his allegiance to terror group as well. how important is it to find out how he became radicalized and if he was directed or just inspired by i.s.i.s.? >> it's pretty important to find out how. it's even more important to find out if he was directed, because you're going, you're going to want to trace that back to who is directing him. does i.s.i.s. have people on the ground? do they have do they have people on the ground in a country other than than syria or those territories? so that would be critical. but, you know, he has three phones, two laptops that they've recovered. they got into one phone very quickly. and i believe that helped validate some of this fealty to i.s.i.s.. they have to crack a couple of other p

but we have new reporting are john miller is actually kind of connecting some of the dots here.eard from a law enforcement official close to the investigation that the cybertruck was actually rented from turo. that is the same car rental company that was used by the suspect in new orleans. now, as is standard, according to this source, they are seeing if there is a connection between the new orleans attack and this explosion. but as of this writing, they have not yet found a connection. that source also revealed what was inside the truck explosives that included fireworks, gas tanks and camping fuel. and authorities believe that that was connected to a detonation system controlled by the driver. we're also hearing this same sentiment from elon musk, who tweeted out that they have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented cybertruck, and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. so he was clear to say that this was not an issue with the cybertruck. and the sheriff also earlier said that they are checking for secon
