mitchell. she's the prison employee considered a person of interest and questioned by police. nbc's john yang now outside the prison. john, what do we know today? >> reporter: well right now, andrea, i can tell you right now at the other end of this highway, this is the one highway leading in and out, they are conducting searches clearing, looking through abandoned houses. investigators in camouflage and tactical gear going into the woods, checking abandoned houses all along this highway leading away from the prison. we also are told that there are house-to-house searches going on in willsboro, new york which is where yesterday's search was based on a tip, an apparent sighting. someone said they saw two men walking down a road in the pouring rain and then ducking into the woods. the investigators took that tip seriously enough to divert a lot of resources down there to search that area all day long much of it during some rain came up empty-handed. it is five days now since they were last seen or noticed that they were missing. this could be turning from a hot pursuit, because the search

john we heard from authorities that mitchell did not provide them with those tools, so you now have people wondering, was there another person involved in this, and what kind of scrutiny do guards and contract workers go under when they enter, meaning a metal detector are they also searched? what do we know? >> reporter: there is no search going into this maximum security prison, which i find a little surprising to me but other former guards who worked there tell us that people can go in and out, their bags aren't searched, they're not patted down, there is no metal detector, so small things can be taken in and out of the prison by employees, by civilian employees like joyce mitchell all the time. they are continuing this investigation. they're talking to civilian employees, private contractors and other employees of this prison to see who else might have taken contraband in for these two prisoners. that investigation continues. you know officials tell us that joyce mitchell continues to be questioned continues to provide information. the district attorney said her first information was no

john. what do we know right now about what joyce mitchell is accused of doing here? >> reporter: according to the charging dock unlts they say she smuggled into the prison hack saw blades, chiselles, a punch and a screw driver drill bit. they say she did did this around may 1. so this is five weeks before the escape. she's pleaded not guilty to this the, she's accused of aiding and abetting the escape she is in county jail on $110,000 cash bail. her next court appearance will be 830 chock thirt:30 monday. she is the prison worker who worked in the taylor shop. she has told investigators that she was supposed to have been the getaway driver got cold feet and instead went to the hospital with what she described or what is described to us by investigators as a panic attack. she has also been told investigators that she thought she was in love with one of the escapees richard matt and had previously been investigated for having an improper relationship with david sweat. so now this woman who was working with inmates inside prison is now behind bars accused of helping som

john yang back where the prison is. joyce mitchell, the person of interest, what do we know about her and about what connections we could possibly see about these two men? >> she worked in a tailor shop supervisor where the prisoners made uniforms for the metro north workers. the worker on the commuter train line outside new york. the two prisoners were also assigned to work in that shop. to conceivably the two would have been contact between the two and they're asking her about that looking into the possible connection. all along investigators have suspected that the escapees had help at least inside the prison. this is part of that investigation as you say, she's being questioned by police they stress that she is not in custody and is not under arrest. they also tell us as you say, she had a case of nerves the day of the arrest the day of the escape rather and checked herself into the hospital. local affiliate wpdx in new york reports that two law enforcement sources tell them that the ride that they the two escapees were expecting

john henry smith has more. >>reporter: the times union is reporting that prison employee joyce mitchell has admitted to police that she provided the two men with smuggled power tools and a cellphone in alead up to their escape from the clinton correctional facility last week. police also believe she failed to show up after initially agreeing to be the getaway driver. police believe that has left the two men to fend for themselves on foot. the search for the two men is concentrated in an area less than five miles from the prison where officials shut down roads and a school. one mom in a town of katieville says whether schools open friday or not, she's playing it safe with her three girls. >> i'm keeping them home. yes. right here. until this is settled anyway. or at least it's wound downed some. >>reporter: a helicopter continuously circled the area thursday. on the ground police stopped and searched vehicles on route 3. many residents brought food to officers doing their work. >> the people around here have been great. they've been very welcoming patient. we hope in very short order we'll have these guys in custod

. >> john officials say that richard matt established a relationship with joyce mitchell over a couple of months. i know that you tried to speak with her husband. he's been m.i.a., not talking to the press at this point. he's not suspected of any wrongdoing nor is he expected to be charged at this point. do we know any more about what he's been able to provide to authorities? >> reporter: we don't know. he also works in the prison works in the same tailor shop in the same sort of role, a supervisory role. we don't know if he's been questioned or what information he might be providing. we don't know his awareness level of all of this. >> it's a lot to be uncovered here. but as you pointed out, clint, many times when someone's willing to risk so much it is for money or love. and in this case the allegation is that she did this out of love. but getting nervous and leaving and not providing that getaway car, you can only wonder if she'd follow through with this plan because it was so elaborate and these men were missing for a very long time before guards discovered it. they could have gott

. >> reporter: john and christine, it seems the investigation is now focused on the paintings that richard matt was making behind bars. we already know prison seamstress joyce mitchell received one of those paintings. she was charged with helping those two men escape by providing them the tools they used to break out, and now we've learned that 57-year-old male prison guard gene palmer also on the honor block where those two men were housed he received one of those paintings as welch his attorney telling cnn that that is the focus of the investigation into him. the focus of the interviews that police searched his home. they wanted to talk to him about that painting about his relationship with those two men and with skbrois mitchell as well. he had daily and constant contact with them. because he was a guard, he tried to have a good working relationship with the inmates for safety reasons. his attorney told me 100% he denies any knowledge of the escape plan. take a listen to what he told me. >> i can 100% confirm that he did not know that they were plan being to break out of the prison. these two people are psycho paths. they are master manipulators. they're obviousl

mitchell has already been tied to matt and is being questioned in connection with her reported role as the would-be getaway driver. johnsh from "the hunt" joins us to talk. and our panel on that news and developments lenny defall former commander of u.s. marshal service, for new york and new jersey robert fernandez, currently runs similar task force covering the washington, d.c. area and maryellen o'toole, former fbi profiler. so rob, investigators are zeroing in and set up a perimeter. you caution fugitives can still slip through? >> absolutely. it is very similar to the eric frahm manhunt last october. i was out in the woods two weeks looking for him. thought we saw him. tight perimeter on a much smaller area. it is very easy for these guys to slip through. >> is that just because of the dense underbrush? for someone who hasn't spent time in that kind of region, environment, if you actually have seen somebody how can they still slip through? >> because you can't, you have men posted at certain distances, but it's -- it just because of the landscape, because of the foliage, we were set up in one place where there was

mitchell. she's pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. joining me tonight is john's head new york. what is the latest on this investigation? >> as you said it's in this area where they discovered last weekend a break-in in a cabin and turned up the dna of both of these escaped killers on the run. the intense search continues up here they have no evidence that they've left this area. they're still looking around here, they don't believe they've gotten far, they believe they're still on foot. gene palmer, the prison guard who has now been charged, the d.a. says he supplied them or he's the one who took the frozen ground beef from the taylor shop that joyce mitchell brought in with hacksaw blades and drill bits inside this hunk of ground beef. he's the one who took it to them, took the prisoners in the -- in their cells, eight days before the prison break. he also as you said showed them the catwalk that they used for their escape in november of 2014. this investigation continues, they still are looking to see who else might have helped them. >> thank you, john. repor

john, i want to talk about the search. tell us about what the da is saying about joyce mitchell and ebbs plaining the contraband and relationship with the other prisoner sweat. >> if you heard, thomas he was very clear he did not according to their investigation bring in power tools to the prison to give to these two escapees. i should stress he kept saying power tools. and on sunday the head of the -- major of the new york state police for this region for company b told me that they had found what he said not sophisticated cutting tools in the prison, which suggested to me some sort of cutting edges or cutting blades. so we don't know if that was part of it. he does say she does acknowledge she did bring in contraband to the prisoners. he said he wouldn't be specific about it. he said contraband can be anything from toothpaste to extra food to magazines, not supplied by the prison, to cocaine. when we asked him if he could be more specific he said it's not toothpaste and it's not cocaine. it's a pretty wide gap there that we're left with. we also know the district attorney told us that in the past 12 months there was a complai
