joining us now ambassador john negroponte serving under president george w.ush and five time ambassador for the united states. great to have you with us. let's begin with what seems to be silly sanctions handed back and forth between his administration and what a rare putin after this administration promised grave consequences for the invasion. is there any risk for this type of contact with nuclear arsenals? >> first of all, is fortuitous the president will be going to europe next week to meet with the european leaders with the nato secretary general and i think the spotlight on the situation in the ukraine is urgent united states and allied -- european allies work together to confront this situation. the sanctions imposed in my view were just a first step. a shot across the about to suggest if mr. putin goes further he will face more serious consequences. certainly it is disturbing if true the troops are on the border with the ukraine and we should be doing everything within our power to show support military, political, economic to the ukraine to shore up

. >>> i'm joined by the former director of national intelligence john negroponte and david ignatius,oth of you, for being here. let's start out with that meeting which if my clock is right might be taking place. you've been doing some talking to folks about what's on the table here, because it seemed to me before it was all about, listen, putin, you need to talk to the government in kiev. >> that remains part of it, candy, talking today to a senior state department official about the meeting tonight in paris. i heard -- the basic core principles that form the agenda for secretary kerry, and i'll briefly run through them, first idea there must be de-escalation of this crisis. and i think that speaks to the russian troops 40,000 to 50,000 across from eastern ukraine. those troops have to back off and that's a key signal. second, disarmament of regular forces inside ukraine. the russians have repeatedly talked about the regulars who were harassing russian speakers. we think that's mostly nonsense, but that's an issue that would be addressed. third, the need for international monitors to

. >>> i'm joined now by john negroponte, a former ambassador and the first person to serve as director of national intelligence, a position created in the post-9/11 era. and john galea, former member of the national transportation safety board. ambassador negroponte, i want to go to you first. you can put on your intelligence hat here. what right now are u.s. intelligence agencies looking for, doing, fearful of? >> first of all, it is quite surprising this has gone on that long. secondly, i'd say it is also a surprise that we haven't really gotten any information from any other country. and i think presumably the plane flew over a number of them. i think that they, like the malaysians themselves, who are, after all, in charge of the investigation, are pretty much starting from the beginning. i don't think there's anything definitive out there and i think everything we've heard so far is more of a theory and a hypothesis and there's nothing yet that's been concrete enough to fill in behind those initial suspicions. >> you can't go down just one road yet. >> i don't think so. >> we do kn
