i'm joined tonight by john nichols, washington correspondent of "the nation" magazine and author of the book "uprising." john, what does this mean? okay, he's got attorney bills, but what does it really mean? >> well, he's got a lot of attorney bills, and that means a lot. you just mentioned $55,000. but that's not the whole of it. this is the important thing. the financial disclosure forms give you wide range. so he's confirmed he spent -- or he owes $50,000 to one firm. he owes between $5,000 and $50,000 to another firm. so we could be at $100,000. and his campaign has spent $115,000 more hiring two additional firms -- >> what kind of work are they doing? what are they, answering all the questions for him? >> this is what the governor tried to suggest back in february. he said, oh, i needed somebody to help with the paperwork and all that. but these two firms that we're talking about, the core two firms with $50,000 and $5,000 to $50,000, these are core defense lawyers. he's hired lawyers who list on their website that they deal with murders, with major drug cases, with grand jury inv

. >> joining any now are john nicholls, washington correspondent for "the nation" and steve kornacki, political columnist for "salon" and msnbc political analyst. john, we've seen worse election crimes in this country, but giving out $5 sandwiches to get someone's vote, it reads as a technical violation of wisconsin law. >> well, you have to understand that wisconsin is pretty tough on these things. historically it's been a rigidly ethical state. this law is well-known in wisconsin, especially to people like paul ryan. paul ryan has run in a dozen primary and general elections since 1998, and he managed campaigns, ran campaigns before he became a candidate himself. so it's a little bit shaky for him to suggest he was unaware of the law, and it might have been a good idea for him to remind his friend mitt romney of it. >> there are a lot of states with these laws in the professional campaigners know about it. it's no surprise. i want to get to the president's speech today and how he took on the ryan plan directly and especially let's go to what he had to say about the ryan plan and med

of a government shutdown just before the election joining me now to offer his take on this is john nichols washington correspondent for the nation magazine and author of the book uprising john welcome it's good to be with you thanks for joining us this could be a replay of something that happened back in the ninety's during the clinton administration can he explain what that was played out and what the consequences were. absolutely newt gingrich came to power nine hundred ninety four on the wave of a so-called republican revolution republicans got control of the house and the senate for the first time in generations and they felt that they were incredibly empowered in fact if you went across the country and looked at at the real vote margins it was only a handful of votes that actually put them into this strong position gingrich overplayed his hand he believed that he could put president clinton in a corner and frankly president clinton let himself be put in a little bit of a corner and then pushed back what alternately played out was a situation where gingrich was horribly embarrassed loo

also joining us john nichols, author of "uprising." nd works out of wisconsin, but joins us from denver. thank you for being here. john, i want to start with you since are you new to our table, via satellite. rick santorum this week is saying he won't be unrealistic about staying in the race, but i wonder, if santorum loses wisconsin is this the end of santorum's campaign? >> it's pretty close to that. rick santorum has gone in in a big way in wisconsin. he campaigned hard, went to the right places, has gone to the factory towns of wisconsin's eastern shore along lake michigan. those are traditional, blue collar and very overwhelmingly catholic areas where he thought he would make a real break through. he cap pained hard with the burgeoning religious right in wisconsin. to be honest, he hit the ground well. went bowling in sheboygan, or fond du lac and hit three strikes. people said this guy, doing it right. the problem is that mitt romney really recognized the threat of wisconsin. wisconsin is a maverick state. tends to vote renegade.

i'd point to the very important work by the media critics john nichols and robert mcchesney figuring out the ratio of journalists to public relations professionals. it's becoming even worse. there is a funny boxing movie in the '50s. people become very sophisticated in creating stories about reality that are unquestioned. and in the case of weapons of mass destruction, it was a literal conspiracy by people acting in concert with media professionals like judith miller. in the case of austerity, you have a billionaire like pete peterson setting up foundations and having people write op-eds and all the rest. so what we see as a result of the decline of this sort of civic minded journalism that i think with profound exceptions, henry luce represented i think nobly is something in which the interests have taken over from the public interest. >> michael. >> i guess i'd like to just stay a few words of dissent again. from the idea a little disagreement i guess with alan, also with rick, about the idea that was ever anything lacking in the golden age of journalism, ever a time when there was

as our guest john nichols reports, a group called the american legislative exchange council used theaw as a mod toll push stand your ground-type legislation across the country. as i've said, two dozen states have something like this. ben released a report that says a.l.e.c. is behind any anti-state voter laws. and we are also joined by the editor of the "nation" magazine who has written extensively about this alec law. gentlemen, i want you to listen to something right now, a variation of the stand your ground law in texas after the florida law paved the way. it was a linchpin for the man joe horn. let's listen to a portion of a scary 911 call from september 2007 in which he, mr. horn, describes two men breaking in a neighbor's home. >> i want you to listen to me carefully. okay? >> yes. >> i have officers coming out there. i don't want you to go outside of that house. i don't want you to have that gun in your hand when those officers are poking around over there. >> i understand that, okay, but i have a right to protect myself too, sir. you understand that. >> yes, sir. >> and there

"the rachel maddow show" is next. >> hello. happy midnight. and thanks to you at home for staying with us for the next hour. it is just a few seconds past midnight here on the east coast right now. and there is good news and bad news for mitt romney tonight out odof news, of course, is the biggest news. nbc news now projecting that mitt romney, the former governor of massachusetts, has won the wisconsin primary. the biggest prize of this entire election night. at this hour with 93 prosecut% vote reported in wisconsin, romney with 42% of the vote, santorum with 38% of the vote, ron paul and newt gingrich running a distant third and fourth behind them. so that's the good news for mr. romney. that win for mr. romney in wisconsin tonight puts him one step closer to securing the republican presidential nomination. it escalates the calls for

. >> john nichols reports on the public protests that took place in madison, wisconsin in february of last year in reaction to governor scott walker's decision to removal collective bargaining rights from teachers and public employees. it's about an hour and 15 minutes. >> so, i don't think i can do any better than to read a couple of paragraphs john wrote in the introduction, about -- a lot of people you know, and so comic strips because i produce books for young people. a second childhood. a century ago -- i'm quoting him -- heard that the promise of democracy is a threat to the people of wisconsin who had a call to action in response they formed a populist movement that would inspire franklin roosevelt and the new deal. the old fight was on again as a new generation of robber bare ron trying to undernine the new deal but all 20th century progress. they played it first in wisconsin and went the -- learned the hard way that the people are not so disengaged or disenchanted they will easily surrender their rights. wisconsinites gave a sign of democracy and they passed it on to america.

this is an analysis that was provided by john nichols. two members of alec, the national rifle association and walmart. walmart is one of the major gun sellers in the united states. one thing that has happened by the stand your ground legislation is that it limits the liability of gun sellers. so now what we have is gun sellers with less liability and therefore they cannot be taken to court for selling guns to people. so here we have a situation in florida where we are dealing with mr. zimmerman and a young man who was killed, when we should really be dealing with the national rifle association and the limiting of liability of major corporations to be charged a. a second point i would like to make is mentioned 14%. what you should really consider is the percentage of the independent legislatures, 826 pieces of legislation across the united states. where would that 14% pass? was it largely in republican legislation? if so, does that tell you more than just the number of pieces submitted? thank you very much. guest: i don't know where they
