joining me tonight john nichols and nina turner. nina you first.es? >> never let the truth get in the way of a good story. the state has a surplus, but on the backs of poor people and middle-class people. poverty is up and median income is down. >> what happened to cleveland? >> cleveland is one example. cleveland has a $60 million less than it had before governor kasich became the governor. $1 billion worth loss in local government funding. that is a lot. that impacts the bottom line of government, which is service. >> bob shrum, is kasich a sleeper? he has the media moxie. he knows how to win elections. what's wrong with this guy? >> what's wrong from my perspective is his claims about ohio are economic lunacy. the jobs are not created by budget surpluses. they were created by the auto bailout, by what the president did. he might be a very intriguing candidate because he looks a little moderate. he's very conservative. you cited the medicaid expansion, but in republican primaries he's going to have to move very far to the right to try to get that

john nichols, stay with us. i want to play a clip of scott walker distancing himself from rudy giuliani's comments. >> you were at a dinner last night where rudy giuliani was. i said i do not believe the president loves america. what do you think about these comments because they are creating a stir this morning? >> the mayor can speak for himself. i'm not going to comment on what the president thinks. he can speak for himself. >> walker is very well defined, anti-union, against workers. this guy has no problem finding inging himself on some issues, but he couldn't find himself on this one. what do you make of that? >> scott walker published a book a year ago called "unintimidated." that's how he's selling himself. on the simplest of issues look i believe my president loves our country. he couldn't do it. you really have to ask yourself where's the there there with this guy if he is so intimidated by donors and powerful players. how do you expect him to lead as a president? >> it's almost it's been like he's bee

for more let me bring in john nichols. also with us this evening is larry cohen.entlemen, great to have you with us. larry, you first. where's the merit here? what am i missing? what's good about what you're hearing? >> nothing. 80% of american workers haven't had a raise in 30 years, including their predecessors in their jobs. productivity has soared during that time and none of that is shared with workers. he's concerned about the 6% of workers who have collective bargaining. within the union contracts, there are dozen of examples of productivity pay increases. production can determine how much individual workers get and in many areas the discretion goes beyond that but it is objective and there's a process for it instead of this willy li williey nilly. it's an outrage. >> pretty amazing. one more question mr. cohen, on this. doesn't this set the table for discrimination? doesn't it set the table for playing favorites? if the boss likes you, you're going to get the raise. isn't this a union busting tool here? >> i think he thinks it will be a union busting tool,

joining us in new york is john nichols. a madison-based political writer for the nation and the author of, "uprising: how wisconsin renewed the politics of protest, from madison to wall street." the significance of governor walker comparing isil to the unions of wisconsin? >> i'm afraid it is not the first time he suggested striking down these protests back in 2011 and continuing to try to prevent protests in the capital, try to force protesters out, has somehow prepared him to deal with the world. the tragedy of this is so profound on so many levels first off, he is overestimating his own skills. second, he is underestimating the challenges and the complexity of the threats from around the world. but most of all, he is deeply deeply mischaracterizing those who rose up to challenge and question his policies. these are school teachers and snowplow drivers and nurses and parents of children with autism and other challenges, seniors who are concerned about their care. this was not just a union protests in wisconsin, but an ant

john nichols covers the story for the progressive magazine, "the nation." >> it's no secret that in northern industrial states, labor unions, particularly public sector unions are the backbone of the democratic party. walker went right at that base. >> by monday, february 14th, graduate students at the university of wisconsin madison who belong to a union of teaching assistants organize a march to the nearby state capitol to protest the bill. >> these graduate students mostly started going into the capitol. it was very kind of gentle protests in many senses. and tv cameras were there, and i think it had a very powerful impact. >> tuesday brings more protests. >> by the next day, there were many, many people who said, well, you know, i think i'm going to go get in on that. >> images of outraged citizens at the capitol spread quickly via television, youtube and facebook. >> this affects the lives, affects the economy, jobs, everything. >> on wednesday, a crowd of more than 30,000 people shows up including teachers from all over the state and thousands of students from the university. >> some o
