stanford lawended school and in the process met my .usband to be, john o'connor he was a year behind me in law school. we decided to get married, and i graduated from the law school, and we both liked to eat, and that meant one of us was going have to work, and since i was out of law school, that was me. i thought no problem. there were at least 40 notices on stanford's bulletin board saying, "stanford law graduates, we would be happy to talk to you about job opportunities. give us a call." there were 40 different messages . of thoseevery one notices. not a single one would even give me an interview. i said, "why?" they said, "we don't hire women." was.was the way it i got out of law school about 952, but isn't that amazing? they would not even talk, and i really did need to get a job. i heard the county attorney in san mateo, california, had once had a woman lawyer on its staff, so i thought that was encouraging. i would go see him, and i made an appointment. in california, they elect a county attorney, so they are always glad handers, and he gave me an appointment to see him, and i

heroes for a lot of us, guys cal ripken and riggo, john riggins, save for the "sandy baby" comments he made to justice o'connor. a lot of what we did centered around our own athletic events and going to see sporting events and just having a good time with each other. greta: outside of sports, who were his heroes? who were his mentors? scott: i don't have a good answer on that. probablye were all more shallow than we should have been back then and the heroes were really guys like that. brett was definitely more mature than the rest of us. he may have had heroes. i don't think at the time he had any real judicial heroes beside his mother. but, you know, he is one of those guys that was always just a little bit more mature and made better decisions than the rest of us. when i think of him, i recall that scene in "it's a wonderful life" where peter bailey and george bailey were at the dining room table and the father tells his son, george, you were born old. and the son says, what's that dad, it's my trick ear? i always felt brett was born old. he was born just more mature, had better decision-making than the rest
