how did you meet john o'keefe? eet john in 2004, february, at his sister's 30th birthday party. >> so what drew you to him? what did you like about him? >> i thought he was handsome and he was sweet. and -- i mean, i was 24, so that's -- that was about the criteria at the time. it just came and went. and -- didn't speak to him again. not intentionally, just wasn't serious. >> but now more than 15 years later, karen is living in the boston area with a career as a financial analyst and an adjunct professor teaching finance. and she sees a message from john on facebook. >> when i saw his picture, it was with several young children. and then it triggered my memory that his sister and his sister's husband had passed away. and he told me, "yeah, i have the kids now." i thought that was amazing. and he said, "they're 9 and 12." three days later, he came over and i cooked. and -- it was like -- very natural. >> how serious did things get that second round? >> pretty serious very fast. the second week he said, "do you want t

. >> reporter: accusing 41-year-old read hitting her boyfriend, police officer john o'keefe, with her suv in 2022 after a night of drinking, and then leaving him to die in the snow. read says she last saw john after dropping him off at an after-party at a home on fairview road, awoke middle of the night and he wasn't home. >> now i have an immense sense of dread. like, a fright in me that i have not experienced. experienced before. >> reporter: investigators finding pieces of a taillight they say is from read's car at the crime scene. later charged with second-degree murder and pleaded not guilty. abc news granted exclusive access behind the scenes as read prepared for her trial. >> hiding out like this, you just watch the world pass you by and you -- going through the motions. pun intended. and you know it could all end. i could be convicted. >> reporter: read's defense team arguing in hearings the injuries on john o'keefe's body were not consistent with him being hit by a car. they claimed she was framed. >> there are people in that house actually responsible for his death. >> repor
