this one was different because associate justice john paul stevens was not on the bench. 33 years, think about that. for the life of virtually all of the students here, he had been on the court and had been an important figure in the court also deliberations. he decided to retire at the age of 90. we all miss justice stevens greatly. he was an extraordinary terrorist -- extraordinary jurist and patriots. we are happy with elena kagan. she hails from new york. her presence on the court is historic. for the first time, the court has three women on the bench. she joins justice sotomayor. and justice ginsburg has served on the court since 1993. there is one item of history that i would like to mention. this month marks the 70th anniversary of the supreme court building. most of you have seen pictures of our building or have had a chance to visit it. it is a beautiful house in the opposite the capitol in washington, d.c. the court did not convene there until 1990 -- until 1935 when the institution was 100 years old. before that, the court always thought the short end of the stick when it came
