john lewis's work didn't stop there before that he was a freedom rider known as one of the foot soldiers of the civil rights movement and served in congress since 1986 during all those decades in power john lewis never stopped fighting for those less well off not only fighting for african-american rights but also fighting for native american rights and those in the l.g.b. t.q. community he is a man who spoke the same day that dr martin luther king jr made his i have a dream speech and is the last person until his death who was alive who spoke that day this is a man who worked on both sides of the aisle to get things done he was often called the conscious of the u.s. congress he will be greatly missed and i think today is a day of sadness but also a day of celebration because john lewis continues to really be an inspiration for all generations in this country they look to him as an example of a man who literally spilt blood for the cause of the civil rights era his body will now go and lay in repose in montgomery alabama where a sermon will be given and then early next week his body will be laid out day in the rotunda in washington d.c. so members of the public can pay their respects
