we think of the other adamses, john quincy's dad and samuel adams, but the book ends with john quincy adams 68 years later, on june 17, in the 1840s, with the building of the bunker hill monument, built on bunker hill, and once again he refused to attend, and yet he watches once again from the family home where he sees the smoke of a cannon go off that reminds him of that time, and at this time in his life, john quincy adams, a president, is now a lowly u.s. congressman who is taken up the fight against slavery, because what he realizes is the work that his doctor, dr. joseph warren, and his father, worked so hard for, is not over, and we segway to brenda. >> very interesting. a pleasure to be here. thank you for the introduction, grate to be here with nathaniel philbrick, and especially feel like as nathaniel was saying, baton has been passed, and the baton is john quincy adams and not necessarily a name that we conjure with anymore you think of -- i don't know -- washington and jefferson and madison and later, of course, lincoln, and even later than that, grant, and going forward. j

i hadn't realized the hatred, one example, of john quincy adams and daniel webster. adams called daniel webster the man with the rotten heart. it was daniel webster who blocked john quincy adams' one major aspiration, to be a united states senator. daniel webster did not want his other deligate from massachusetts to be john quincy adams, a former president whom he couldn't manipulate. he wanted somebody less threatening and got somebody less threatening. for the rest of his life, john quincy adams resented webster for that particular action. they hated each other. they also loved each other. it was daniel webster who wrote who wrote the inscription that is on john quincy adams about the accomplishments. >> hated and loved each other? >> it was a love and hate relationship. >> another one. clay could be savage. there was a fistfight on the senate floor. who was benton? >> thomas hart benton a democrat , from missouri. henry clay was a whig. they were opposing parties. benton was a large bullying type of man who was remembered for pulling a -- pulling a -- for moving do

john quincy. >> john quincy adams is the only u.s. president who resurrected a dead political career in russia of all places. he lobbied for free trade. he'd been down on his luck and suddenly emerges as someone liable to be president. >> and you are also writing about louis c. adams. >> yes, this was his wife and she had to leave her sons behind in boston to go to russia and this wasn't her twice. and then she emerges as someone trusted with a decision making power in her life and death matters. she really changes and transforms to be reunited with her family. >> how did you come about this particular piece of subject matter? >> i read about the diary because she has a trip from st. petersburg russia to paris in 40 days and i thought this could be a movie. then i realized it means to be a book about both of them and their relationship and how they get strength from one another and so that is how this came to be. >> is the book empathizing your foreign policy in that era war is emphasizing more of their relationship or a little of bot
