john ramose reports. >> reporter: people often joke how readily you see the sun in pacifica, but after this week that's become a tourist attraction. in the east bay the warnings about extreme heat continued, but shortly before noon the temperature in walnut creek, 91. that seemed pretty good for this family who were setting out an outdoor reunion party at heather farms. >> i like it like this, i can deal with heat up to 90-something, then i'm miserable [ laughter ] >> reporter: walnut creek was forecast for 103. this phoenix resident laughs . >> it's probably maybe 105 or 106 right now in arizona. this feels good. i wish the summer for the whole summer i wish it was like this, but it's not. >> reporter: but if there's one place that can be envied it's the town of pacifica at 2:00 p.m. temperatures stood at a balmy 66 degrees, and fully clothed beachgoers were at tip-off they had come to get away from inland heat. >> we were planning for the national parks, but the temperature over there is also over 100 [ laughter ] so we decided for the beach. >> it feels like an oven literally, at ho

john ramose has new developments. >> reporter: they say it's harder to build something than to tear it down and it took 30 years for the gilroy garlic festival to put this town on the map and only if you seconds for a lone gunman to take it all away. there was a crowd at christmas hill park in gilroy, but they came for the soccer, not for the garlic. this would normally be the weekend for the garlic festival but it all came crashing down when a lone gunman began shooting into the crowd exactly 5 years ago to the day. >> we have an active shooter of the garlic festival. >> reporter: the sheer randomness was shocking and although police killed the shooter within one minute three people died and 11 others were wounded. in the years since the community has suffered with the loss of the festival. >> i think all entities have struggled. school programs have struggled and different organizations can't get back. just the economic development of our town. hotels and restaurants, everything has been affected by not having a festival. >> on of those restaurants is the garlic city cafe. >> that's

john ramose picks up the story from there. >> reporter: there isn't a lot of information being released but what there is is all bad. late friday night, fremont police put out an urgent call for help, a man was found dead in san francisco and his three-year-old daughter was nowhere to be found. >> the mother of the girl called us asking if we could check on her welfare at her father's apartment located in fremont. the mother of the child got news that the father was deceased in san francisco and the child was not with him at the time. the fremont police department went to his apartment in fremont and the child was not located. >> this is allegedly the apartment of jared lorenzo, no details were released about how jared died but the police seemed pretty disparate to locate ellie as quickly as possible. >> this is not a normal call, it is terrifying and frightening for the family and for all of us, we are going to be here late, certainly trying to locate this missing child. >> reporter: later in the day, fremont pd put out a sad notice on social media saying it is with a heavy heart we re
