brian. >> richard engel along with john ray by satellite from bahrain tonight. thanks. >>> we want to check back in on the revolution in egypt where the army is in charge officially for now, but don't tell that to the egyptian people, who held what they called a day of victory protest rally today. our own ron allen remains on post in cairo tonight. ron, good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you, brian. tonight the military has had enough and they have cleared out tahrir square, cleaning things up, after one of the biggest days of protest in celebration that we've ever seen here. mubarak is gone, but the people still have demands and grievances that they want met. at the top of the list, they want the military leaders now in charge of this country to move more quickly to civilian rule and democracy. that has not been happening, they say. tonight the military pushed back a bit issuing a tough new order against labor strikes and protests. workers across the country have been demanding better wages and working conditions. it's been all peaceful here, but as we'

john ray from our english broadcast partner, itn, has the latest from cairo this morning. john, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. a morning here that could be make or break for president mubarak. overnight in liberation square, tahrir square, the numbers swelling this morning. i'm looking down from our office here, and i see a steady stream of people heading up to joinç e protest. we have said all along here that if president mubarak loses the army, then he loses the presidency, and that's why this statement from the army overnight, it's just so significant. not so much that we will mark people marching today, month one expects them to do that, but the fact is, and i quote, "we recognize the legitimacy of your demands." that comes close to taking sides. the army splintering away from the president. that doesn't mean, however, it's going to be easy for people taking to the streets today. there are roadblocks around the city center. we're told that the security forces are trying their best to stop people coming in. then, of course, there are the police.

we begin with a report from john ray of "independent television news," in tunisia. >> reporter: afters of protests and bloody reprisals, colonel qaddafi conjured up crowds of supporters in the center of his capitol. "the time is coming when i will arm you all," he told them. "libya will become a red flame." all this just a few miles from the suburbs where opponents crying "god is great" set out to bring down the leader who symbolizes to so many the very devil himself. there followed the lethal and familiar response. but this was just one of several demonstrations getting ever closer to the heart of the regime. whether he is kidding or really is this confident, the wink from qaddafi's son speaks of a ruling family now certain there can be no escape. >> plan "a" is to live and die in libya. plan "b" is to live and die in libya. plan "c" is to live and die in libya. >> reporter: the past 24 hours have seen rebellions that encircle the capitol. in misrata, they hung a noose around a poster of qaddafi and trampled his image underfoot. to the south, in gharyan, they chanted libya's free and
