and fox news senior national correspondent john roberts. hn joins us from the outer banks of north carolina of north carolina. let me begin with you, bernie. and simply say how serious is this because we know fear mongering. bernie, how serious is this? >> it's a category 2 hurricane. going to cause damage and cause damage from the outer banks eastern carolina all the way up toward maine. taking a one in 50 year track that is not moving north and northeast south coming right up the coast. it's impacting a huge area. landfall tomorrow morning. category 2 hurricane maximum sustained winds around 100 miles per hour right near morehead city, then the damage starts to spread northward with the hurricane. >> the damage that you are talking about is it damage from the wind from the water? what is the damage likely to come from? >> >> all three. first of all a tremendous storm surge in the outer banks of north carolina. anywhere from 6 to 11 feet. that's going to cause major damage off to the east of the eye wall. then the storm as it moves north, n

john roberts, all of the best to you in northline mall. thanks a lot.storm now and what is the projection? we expect an update within minute in the national hurricane center. they give them every three hours beginning at 8:00 and len and two and five and len. they have gone to do it every two hours and we have an update at 7:00 and it comes before that and another one at 9:00 in the next few minutes and go to maria molina. >> that's right. as of 7:00 p.m. we knew that the center was 35 milesest of the norfoc, virginia. it is slowly moving northward and further off to the east of norfork, virginia. dry air is starting to work near the center of the storm system. you can see it eating away near the convection right there. very big in size. i don't want anyone to breathe a sigh of relief. it is a good sign because of how close the storm is to land. but it is over water and likely going to see more convection and thunderstorms reform in the next several hours. something that does help hurricanes restrengthen and tropical storms restrengthen is water tempera

john roberts is in kill devil kill devil, north carolina, where he has been throughout the hurricane today. john, what's the update from where you are? >> we're getting it from the other side, for most of the day the wind was coming off the ocean. now it's coming back from off other areas. we're seeing some of the awesome beauty of nature as the incoming tide and those waves pushed in by irene meet the counter veiling winds and just getting beautiful spray coming off the tops of those waves. it really is incredible to see this. got a wrap up of what's happened so far on the outer banks and then on the other side of the sound, talking with hyde county emergency management. they say they've got major flooding up at the top of pamleco sound, pushed all that water up to the top of the sound in places like scanton, they've got a lot of flooding. they haven't had sign of injuries, certainly no fatalities in hyde county. the same thing holds true for turrytuck county. in kitty hawk and nagshead and kill devil kill devil where we are, it's been a fairly mild storm. not really much sign of dam

martha: let's go down to john roberts who is live from kill devil hills in north carolina.ll go to janice dean tracking the storm in the extreme weather center. >> reporter: i hope you know your evacuation route if and when we hear those evacuation calls. this will be a storm that will scrape across the northeast. there is no way of escaping it. right now looking like a formidable storm. it's a category 2 and on the verge of category 3. there are signs this storm is strengthening. you can see the outer bands already moving across the carolinas, down towards daytona beach. this is a very large storm. tropical storm-force winds 290 miles from the center of this storm. so the whole east coast will feel the effects of this storm and a good chunk of the northeast coast and the mid-atlantic will feel hurricane-force winds for an extended period of time. hurricane advisories from the south carolina, north carolina border all the way up to new england. i want to make sure folks know we are no longer thinking this storm is going to go out to sea. we are going to be dealing with it a

john robert system in kill devil hills in the north carolina outer bank. how goes it, john? >> it is going well. bill. in fact kids had to go to school by ferry while they replaced the cut that isa bell made. in a couple of places by cape hatteras island the storm swell is come in to a degree it may have cut inland. there is another interesting phenom nan under way. i am going to go out in the next hour and that is waters of the sound back in kitty hawk bay are pushed back by hurricane and turned them in to mud flaps. anybody on the outer banks will know that is a lot of boats and paragliding. there is nothing but mud . in the next few hours or so waters will come back in and surge up. and in addition to the storm surge we'll get we'll get south side storm surge. we'll tell you about the lay of the land. we are in an unusual part of the hurricane. and moments when the wind is blowing at close to 70 miles per hour. and you are getting that kind of a gust and a lull and then you get a rain band that comes in and we are pretty dry. and the sky is beginning to brighten and that

let's go to john roberts in kill devil hills. how are you doing? >> reporter: we're doing pretty good. the hurricane took an unexpected jog to the right about an hour ago and ever since we have been in the thick of it. we think the eye passed us as the hurricane makes its way up the coast. reflecting on the pictures on atlantic beach. we were there wednesday or thursday and i remember walking out that pier. they lost half of that hurricane six years ago and was wobbling. it didn't seem it was going to last in the storm. here at kill devil hills, on the eastern side of the banks. surf is getting higher at the same time the tide is coming in, high tide is expected two hours time. so if the eye doesn't move too far away, on the back side, the storm has been pushing all the water inland, laces like new burn and elizabeth city. that water is starting to make its way back out. it will be soon and i walked out there myself. in kitty hawk bay. it's a surreal thing to do. you have shifting three, four feet water and there is nothing. people wait for these s

john roberts is live from kill devil hills in north carolina where the winds and rain are already picking up, john. >> reporter: good to see you there are about 200,000 fewer people on the outer banks than yesterday morning. they've all heeded the warnings. the hurricane is going to come up from behind us. it's unusual here pause we stick out like a thumb on the edge of north carolina. the hurricane is going to come up behind us then the winds will wrap around and that's when you'll see all the storm surplg come in from the oceanside. we're going to get a surge side from the bay side as well, the sounds side. you can see some surfers out here taking advantage of the waves today, many people who are stragglers sort of putting in one last day of vacation before they get out of dodge. the mayor of kill devil hills, that's where we're broadcasting, ray you've heard the latest advisories up to 105 miles an hour winds. what are your thoughts this morning. >> pretty characteristic of a hurricane, you can never predict them, still a very dangerous storm. glad to see that most of our population is
