and rick santorum in colorado and john roberts is covering the main action live in las vegas where thection is happening today. john is where the action is, what's happening there, john? >> we try to be the best of our ability, kell lip. at the palo verde high school, 20 precincts gathered and they're collecting the ballots for the secret votes and this is the poll for president and it will allocate delegates, based on the percentages that every candidate gets. for every 3.5% the candidate gets of the vote they get one delegate. and he's collecting these votes and this process has gone by quickly, within the last hour, people have spoken on behalf of their candidates and other people asked questioned and said their piece. we talked during registration, what they thought about the candidates and what the issues are that are important to them and first, the gingrich supporter followed by a romney supporter. what they had to say. >> i believe he believes in the constitution and he believes that the founding fathers were christian and they've got feeling and i believe that's what makes him

senior national correspondent john roberts. what are we hearing about that low turnout? to county officials in clark county, largest in nevada includes the city of las vegas and the second largest includes the city of reno and running against the thought that the enthusiasm around today's race as going to boost turnout, far above where it was in 2008 and they're finding that the turnout is much lower than expected and this could have a couple of effects. first of all, could benefit mitt romney because a lot of people who vote for mitt romney are mormon and they have turnout rates, 70 to 75% so if the turnout is low and the mormons like to come out, that could throw more votes mitt romney's way and the big question tonight with mitt romney, will he go above 50%? will he get a majority of the vote? some people are talking will he get above 55%, who could that hurt? that could hurt newt gingrich, he needs people out and could benefit ron paul because, harris,'s he got a big ground oranges in nevada and had people here since 2008, the last time he appeared in the caucuses an

john roberts live for us in las vegas. what do we know, john? >> reporter: good morning, johnnie and jenna. there are a lot of reports, a lot of information coming from the campaigns it could go either way. that donald trump could support either newt gingrich or mitt romney. hear is the real irony of it. we're in a state where the unemployment rate is 12.6%. 36,000 homes were foreclosed on in 2011 and we're worried about what donald trump will do. he is not been foreclosed on. he is not unemployed. to the story at hand. donald trump will make some sort of announcement the next few hours, a big announcement. we believe it will be an endorsement. he met with mitt romney in september of last year. it was described by people involved as brief and cordial. don't forget donald trump was going to do a debate. he was moderating a debate couple days after christmas in iowa. mitt romney was the first person to call up to say, don't expect me to be there. since then they may have had a lot of conversations we don't know about because when mitt romney went

tonight john roberts tells us what kind of political environment they are entering. >> nevada is seeingt the pain has rarely been this bad. >> we're here in las vegas and we're in one of the most depressed markets in the country and nobody in washington is listening to the people. >> the silver state has been tarnished with an unemployment rate that topped 14% and a housing crisis that is still the worst in the nation. one in 16 properties has been foreclosed on. last year, nevada banks seized 36,000 homes. >> i have a friend that drives a school bus. he gets at the end of his route, he's got three kids on the back of the bus crying. they don't know where they live now. >> rick: it's stories like that that make the nevada caucuses so important for voters. mitt romney won here four years ago in a landslide. he's the favorite, but many republicans are betting he gets a run for his money. amy is the state gop chair. >> i believe there is two candidates. you have congressman ron paul and then you also have governor mitt romney and those two i don't believe ever left our state last go round.
