john roberts is out there. john, what are you seeing? >> reporter: hey, good evening, greta.we are still out here on the streets where donald trump is correct, most of the protesters have disbursed. there is a small group in front of this parking garage. the reason why they're staying here and yelling at the cars as they go by is because the bulk of the people in this parking garage are people going to the trump event. we keep hearing chants of "we won, we won" ringing out through the night here. these protesters, many of them students here at the university of illinois and chicago. and many of them bernie sanders supporters, wanted to express their displeasure with donald trump's candidacy. so they created an environment where the police and the trump campaign had no alternative but to shut it down. that said, with the exception that you've seen that punch that was thrown, greta, there has been zero violence here tonight, just a boisterous and enthusiastic and very passionate crowd of people expressing their political views tonight. and, again, we bring this back to the echo

john roberts points out there have been 8 contested election since 1880.five of the eight the eventual nominee did not go into the convention with a plurality of the votes. that may be why john kasich is hanging in. >> there is history and the outside chance that could happen but it is hard to make a case when you have only one one state, that being your home state. the question for john kasich is where you win. we saw contest, halfway through the process, the process moves to east coast states and west coast states. where does john kasich quinn? there is another wrinkle, the rnc has a on the books but no candidate name can be placed for consideration of nomination unless they won the majority of delegates in eight states. only one candidate surpassed that and that is donald trump so the rnc would need to change its rules which they can do on the eve of the convention to allow someone else in the race unless ted cruz or john kasich reach that standard of majority of delegates in eight states. bill: ted cruz does not think a contested convention is the way

john roberts. thank you so much. david: what a year. melissa: yeah, really. are really high in ohio. john kasich and donald trump ready to duke it out in the state. the pressure is on for the ohio governor leading trump by five percentage points according to a new university poll. here in to weigh in capri, democratic state senator from ohio. lisa, pretty much a dead heat right now. we have a quinnipiac poll showing 38-38. couldn't get closer. whose got the momentum going into tomorrow? >> it is a dead heat, but i would give this one to john kasich. the reality is he won his state two years ago with 64% of the vote. this is a guy that has almost 80% approval generating in the state right now. and he's a sitting governor. so i would give this state to john kasich at the moment. however, if donald trump carries ohio tomorrow, that's the biggest story of the night. because this thing could potentially be over. david: yeah. john kasich is actually -- said as much. capri, ohio folks are tough. you are a state senator. >> that's right. david: you know ohio better th

gave his life to save another >> john robert putting his life and car in front of a another. >> reporter: and his funeral, loved ones remembered him not just for the heroic way he died, but for how he lived, to serve others so selflessly. and today's tribute to deputy kotfila was truly moving. a sea of law enforcement officers came to pay their respects, jenn holloway joins us with more on the tribute to the fallen deputy. >> reporter: john kotfila served to the very end. a young man giving his own life to save the life of another. shall we gather at the river >> reporter: the sweet sounds of hymns filled saint timothy's church as one of the bravest men to wear a hillsborough county deputy uniform was laid to rest. among family and friends were dignitaries including governor rick scott and pam bondi. all there to pay their respects to deputy kotfila, just 30 years old, who gave his life in the line of duty. others. >> reporter: kotfila's father is in the force, his brother, an officer in massachusetts. >> i never thought i could be more proud at his graduation, but i'm more proud now. >>

chief justice john roberts saying, quote, the petitioner has used the phrase "hijacking." it seems to me that's an accurate description of what the government wants to do. but the u.s. solicitor general argued the o-out provision is a sensible balance. the court's liberal wing was on board. there has to be an accomodation. that's what the government tried to do. justice stephen briar: sometimes when a religious person who is not a hermit or a monk is a member of society, he does have to accept all kind of things that are just terrible for him. >> some religious groups support the government and the accommodations already in place. >> petitioners in this case are simply taking a bridge too far. the government has provided a very careful system of exemptions. >> as is often the case, the swing vote is likely to be justice anthony kennedy and he seemed to side with his fellow conservatives which would result in a tie. >> bottom line is we will not obey this mandate no matter how this court rules but we believe based upon what we just heard it will be a split 4 to 4 decision.

deputy john robert kotfila, first made the news after rescuing a kitten from a river view storm drain last year. no one could have ever imagined the second headline involving this deputy would involve a deadly wrong-way crash. and incredible loss for the sheriff's office. >> what do you speak about what [ crying ] >> yeah, you know, these guys -- these men and women are -- excuse me. the men and women are out there trying to prosect everybody. and these guys are very concerned about the drivers at night. in fact, this deputy had hope to become a traffic homicide investigator at some point in his career. >> he says that kotfila was caring, compassionate and understanding. someone who went the extra mile coming from a family in law enforcement. sheriff's david g remembers his graduation. >> i remember him because his father is a state trooper in another state. i remember at his graduation, his father -- he's a former -- it sticks out to me. >> law enforcement officers profession and they interact with the seed yours elements in society, but what doesn't make sense, a deputy so young wit
