john roberts is the current chief justice, six years. start with fred vincent. what did you write about him? >> to parts of this. -- taken a second look at it. appointment, his little bit about his appointment and his work. through the observations of one of his former law clerks. a classmate of mine and remains a good friend. we were born on the same day. we have a lot of reasons to be friends. talking to him gave me some things i thought would b of interest in the book. my ownd source is experience. i was clerking for justice rutledge. i had a few chances to come in i have talked in the book little bit about the things i personally had contact with. some of the opinions he wrote. >> what year did you clerk in the court? >> 1947 term. 1947.me in september, i was there june and early july. >> you were there. what did you take away? >> i took away a lot. a wonderful experience. i don't cover all this in the book but i took away some friendships and i learned a lot about the law. things that are still pretty much the same. it was a very rewarding professional expe

it's probably going to be john roberts going forward.gh, about -- was his decision justified or not? >> well, i think the question before the court was whether the administration had the authority to do this. and they clearly do. and for justice, chief justice roberts to get into the motives, i think, is not something that was really part of what should have been under consideration. and that's a very slippery slope when you go down that route, because a lot of these decisions made by administrations are politically motivated. and so if they're going to get into discussions of what the administration was thinking or strategizing about, i don't know where that leads them. paul: he did the same thing he did on obamacare, which is to give the conservatives some of the law, but he gave the liberals on the court the policy victory, which is what those liberals really wanted, and that is kicking the census, citizenship question out. does that mean that justice roberts is just too political as a justice? >> well, the irony is that he was with t

you are considerably older than john roberts. what happens when a young man like that comes into the court? >> i call him chief. i feel more comfortable calling him chief. it would not bother him in the slightest if i called him john, because we are good friends, but it is one of those traditions thatart of the court sticks with >> me. what has been his impact on the court? how is the affected operation? very has continued to do a fine job in handling the conferences. he is a presenting officer. -- he may be an excellent presenting officer. i know he was very highly regarded the way he handled public affairs. s an excellent presiding officer. he is particularly good in might affairs where you have to be talking to a group of foreign judges and explaining what is going on. l those would have something interesting to say about the history of the court that they could understand and appreciate. he is a very attractive person. >> what have all of the 112, let's stick on the ones you did not serve with. who would you have liked to hav
