you'll remember last term john roberts sided with the liberals in a case concerns whether or not trumpa citizenship question to the census. and basically what roberts said in that case, if you remember, is he said, the way the trump administration went about trying to add the question, that was the problem. so here the dreamers are looking at him again, hoping he might again say, look, the way this was done is illegal. what's interesting about this is they'll hear this case on tuesday and they'll deliberate and they're likely going to release an opinion on this in the spring in the heart of the presidential campaign. that's why this is so important. >> wow. and beyond the usual case load, the supreme court also sits at the nexus of some very important issues right now related to the impeachment inquiry, right? >> right. we're talking about how big this term is going to be, but on top of that, they're going to be taking up some of these cases that are linked to the impeachment proceedings. for instance, this week trump's private lawyers are going to come to the court because they want t

host: because you follow the supreme court, your thoughts on chief justice john roberts being part of the impeachment process? guest: that will be interesting. john roberts is a republican through and through, but he is a republican who cares about institutions. john roberts wants to bend the law as far toward the republican goals as possible without the lawbreaking. which makes him different than the other conservatives who don't care about the lawbreaking. i do not think that john roberts wants to go down as the guy who let trump off the hook, nor does he want to go down at the guy who put the knife in trump's back. he will go straight up the middle, follow the rules as defined by the senate, and follow that closely. if trump people try to pull some shenanigans, even after they set the rules, i don't think he would let them get away with it. i think he will be a beautiful public servant and the upcoming impeachment. a contributing writer, you can find his work online. he is also the executive editor of the above the law w

john roberts had led the caucus through a process orientation.n whether the current situation leads to impeachment trial in the senate. has anything come out on the supreme court about preparations for the justices or the role of the chief justice might be? elizabeth: no and he actually consulted or had with him a congressional parliamentarian. and at he saw his role -- it is a constitutionally prescribed role of the chief justice of united state presiding of the senate and an appeasement trial an impeachment trial. i do not know that anything about the role has changed. the question is more, is there something going on where in anticipation of such a trial and having maybe the chief justice otherwise occupied, that they have altered the schedule. certainly not to my knowledge, but that is something that would be internal to the court. i might be surprised. host: there only two times before that this has happened. are there records available to know how the chief justice's role shapes up during this? the last one was andrew johnson and it was a v

i got disappointed when the chief justice was younger than me, which john roberts is, what is, what ichief justice, he is an extraordinary legal talent. in any generation there is an extraordinarily -- extraordinary legal talent that comes along, summa cum laude at harvard, harvard law review editor, a clerk for judge friendly on the second circuit, one of the finest judges of his generation, clerked for justice rehnquist on , worked at thert justice department, white house, d.c. court of appeals, and picked at the age of 50 to be chief justice of the united states. responsibilities very seriously, he comes to every single meeting he is supposed to, runs the meeting, and could not be a better chancellor. we are privileged to have him serve as chancellor. i would tell you -- will tell you when the story. i did an interview of the chief in front of members of congress and asked, did you always want to be chief justice of the united states? he said, when i was growing up, i didn't think about it. and did you want to be justice of the court at all? did you want to be a judge of any type?
