i just had written a book about john robert lewis who was willing to die for a christian and highly idealized version and vision of american life. john lewis believed contra the realists of history believed that we can bring the beloved community which is a form of the kingdom of god to earth so here is a man born in 1940 who repeatedly in the american south 50 and 60 years ago acted in the tradition of essentially an early christian saint. he bore witness to a vision of reality that if we are all a feeling rather pious but he lived it. and that story is remarkable not least because if you have looked at john lewis when he was learning how to overcome a stutter by preaching to his chickens. you would not had thought this is a young man who with his friends and colleagues male and female mostly black would in fact bear witness and he did it. it's not popular or convenient to say perhaps but if you ask him. that's what he was doing. it was a faith in god and a faith in the new testament vision in the world. and a faith in america. he did not believe that the institution was fundamentally corrup

biden's hometown of wilmington, delaware, but first let's go to chief white house correspondent john robertsjohn, a lot to get to. >> some breaking news at this hour, the trump campaign says it is going to request a recount in the badger state of wisconsin because the margin as it sits right now is about .6% difference between president trump and joe biden, the rules allow you to request recount if the margin is within 1% and it is well within 1%. bill stepian with a statement saying "there have been reports of irregularities in several wisconsin counties which raise doubts about the validity of results. the president is well within the threshold to request a recount and will immediately do so." immediately is a bit of a relative term. before you can ask for a recount the results have to be certified, that's not going to happen until december the 1st. no word yet on whether we are going to hear from president trump today but if joe joe biden does come out as expected i don't expect the president will want joe biden to command the news cycle. he certainly has been busy on twitter and twitter

all i can say is john roberts is no reason quist, right? he's a very different chief justice.there are in his rulings indications that if this issue became right, meaning you could show me votes that were counted that shouldn't have been, i'm likely to become engaged. but even with amy coney barrett on the court, you've got to fight for a majority even if john roberts sides with the liberals. i think the supreme court is in a good spot for the president if he can show the breadth of votes are large enough they could have changed the election. that's the fulcrum on which this final question's going to turn. lou: yeah, it's interesting, you talk about a 5-4 rather than 6 -3 n. my opinion, this should be 9-0. there is a demand now and a hunger in this country to get beyond the level of political corruption that has overtaken even the federal judiciary, the justice department, the fbi, our intelligence agencies. if we cannot rise above that, certainly our supreme court cannot, we're in for even more trouble. and ever growing trouble. john solomon, thanks for being with us, we appr

john roberts, good afternoon to you. we saw the president for the first time today in days paying his respects to arlington national cemetery. what are you picking up on what he's doing now in terms of running the show on this? >> bill, good afternoon to you. the first time that we've seen the president since thursday when he came to talk in the briefing room. he didn't make any public remarks. everything has been on twitter. we know the president is working the phones and talking to everybody he can, driving this process forward, meaning with his campaign advisingers as well. the campaign has been filing lawsuits, collecting affidavits and sworn statements from witnesses that they say there were voting irregularities that happened tuesday and the vote counting after that. what they need to do, they need to get their hands on the ballots so they can examine them themselves and present that in a court of law or they need to have a body like the supreme court saying, in pennsylvania, the law stated that all ballots that ca

i think what changed the position of amy coney barrett to the court, chief justice john robert john robertss no longer the swing vote. conservatives still have a five -- four majority. i think the decision was extremely welcome pointing out inconsistency here, the governors are doing and explain that we don't put the constitution on ice during pandemics. they need to show consistency with how they are are addressing our civil liberties during the pandemic and to go out and say liquor stores and bike shops can stay open but churches and synagogues cannot is, of course violation of basic constitutional rentals. paul: dan, if you read those, they have six opinions here on what was a temporary injunction. it wasn't a final ruling but what is fascinating to me is the fireworks back and forth here with some of these opinions. justice gorsuch unloaded on chief justice roberts previous opinion in the california case. what you make of this hot tempered court? dan: well, i certainly would recommend justice gorsuch opinion to all of our viewers. it is worth the price of admission. the first amendment

let's go to john roberts with outside of the story today. e trump campaign fighting, waging a p.r. battle in terms of the current voting, getting set forth potential legal battles i had. bill stepian and senior advisor jason miller holding up conference call in which they insist some states beginning to turn in biden's direction, still the votes out there for president trump to win, particularly in arizona and pennsylvania. here is what bill stepian said about it. first arizona, than pennsylvania. listen here. >> anywhere from two-thirds to 70% of these votes are coming for the president. that math adds up to a margin that is around 30,000 votes at the president is getting. arizona, with the votes that are still being counted, blow, the president's way. the president went on sylvania by 40,000 votes. by 40,000 votes. >> insisting that all legally cast votes need to be counted, and all illegally counted votes need to be discounted. they did not go into detail on that conference call about what constitutes a legal vote and an illegal votes. the

justices, john roberts and brett kavanaugh, seem not inclined to strike down the entire law. lawsuit focuses on this provision that requires people to buy insurance. that used to be backed up by a tax penalty. it no longer has that tax penalty. opponents of the law say that provision is unconstitutional, and because it is, the entire law has to be thrown out. two key justices don't seem like they will go there. vonnie: that is the only part of the law that is up for discussion. there is no such thing as talking about whether the individual mandate went away, whether the whole thing would collapse or not. greg: they argue the individual mandate has to fall, and then therefore other provisions have to fall, like protection for pre-existing conditions, and because of that, the entire thing including the expansion of medicaid, the marketplace is set up, that is the argument to strike down the entire law. but it seemed pretty clear today that there are not the votes to do that. vonnie: chief justice roberts has voted twice to uphold parts of the law. do we know how amy coney barre
