what's interesting about george ross is that of course is betsy's uncle through her marriage to john and deeply involved in the defense of the delaware. george ross makes perfect sense for a member of a party of people coming to her shop in the spring of '76 because philadelphians were very concerned about the defense of the delaware and the british arriving in philadelphia; washing was in philadelphia. he was gathering up things including tents so i know he's making the rounds through those shops. george ross makes perfect sense as a visit to her shop as does robert morris who was a member of congress in these years but also deeply involved in the defense of pennsylvania. as you work through the stories a lot of it does ring true. when i think about the moment of the cutting of the star i'm seeing a young woman widowed in her twenties worried about the future. the partnership that she had with her fellow up pull sister husband is not husband is not to be. what i see is a young artisan seeking a government contract. she's saying to washington the six pointed stars that would be fine b
