john, i'm going to start with you. you talk a little bit about wh ryan do to help mitt romney in wisconsin. outside of his district, district 1 what can he bring? is it enough to help him with the entire state and even the states surrounding wisconsin? >> it's a great question, soledad. picking a house member is risky. he is well known across the state. the energized republican base in wisconsin was already saying this will be a closer election. remember, the governor of wisconsin was just through a recall election. the republicans won that race despite all the democratic money, all the labor money that came in. the recent poll showed about five points. so in wisconsin there's no question the obama people are going to have to work harder. is it enough? who knows. in the end, vice presidential picks almost never matter. there's the big rollout buzz, then they tend to de, the way both campaigns that we're talking so much about paul ryan, maybe this year will be different. >> and it also seems that a lot of the conversation about his budget is really the co

ryan. it looks like -- i thought it might take a little more time before people might have some second thoughts here, johno you think? >> yesterday i was talking with a friend of mine who's known paul ryan forever, certainly his entire time in washington since he was an intern in washington. you know, he said look, he can either be this genius thing that really does change this thing and help win the election for romney or it could be an absolute disaster. and you know, right now, it is a little too early to tell. there are a lot of folks that are picking out with the class in washington. he cautioned a little bit, did not freak out right now but he acknowledged there is a potential there. i think the thing for ryan that in the end is problematic is that his strength, his efforts to do something on the budget. whether you agree with him or not, he's one of the guys who has been specific in what he wants to do and has proposed changes to entitlement programs to try to save them. those are also his biggest deficit from the things that can hurt him most. people decide they don't like what he has said, you kn

and paul ryan is a turnout pick. >> and, john, what about the independent voters. fall looking at a romney-ryan ticket? >> on the surface they will like the ryan pick a lot, because it is bold. it is energetic. it offers specifics on deficit and debt. this is an issue democratic voters worry about a lot. they worry a lot about the deficit and debt. this is a pick that addresses that. when the ryan plan comes under scrutiny as the camp will do starting today. those specifics scare people off. people like to talk about entitlement reform in abstract but when it comes to dealing with social security and medicare, medicaid as paul ryan has done in his plan that makes some folks nervous. that's one element of the risk of this pick. it is real. a clash of ideas and philosophies. paul ryan to his credit, a lot of republican congressman are happy with the demagogue and deficit and debt but don't want to deal with that. paul ryan owns that plan and put it on paper. it's not rhetorical anymore. way beyond pbumper stickers and politics, the ryan plan will come under scrutiny.
